Exquisite, exceptional Chinese… HOT!, refined and above the norm.
Downtown Flushing… the erstwhile New York City “Little India east”, which morphed into “Chinatown east” and then partially (mostly?) into “Koreatown east”, that pulsing, teeming, thrashing, humming, vibrant ‘hood, packed with shoppers, diners, eaters, walkers, gazers, gawkers, yellers, sellers, teeming masses seeking electronics, oriental groceries, signs, sights, sounds, and sssssmells, and delicious, mouthwatering foody aromas. This is a humming hub of oriental life and hectic activity ~ almost like a mini Hong Kong transplanted into northern Queens, complete with golden-brown roasted ducks hanging in restaurant windows, amidst flashing strobelights, hawkers on street corners, sign-carrying yellers flashing flyers-in-your-face, and the resplendent colors of cheap wares everywhere. Just fascinating, fascinating and deliciously fascinating !! Che Li is located on 39th Avenue, by the Hyatt Place Flushing ~ a neighborhood that has morphed from down-at-heel to funky and cool. This place is a visual and culinary delight – if you like eastern food. The décor is Chinese garden from the Jiangzhe region – very much in keeping with the cuisine: with a curving path through wooden pavilions with ornate, carved pergolas over seating groups, plantings, artworks, rocks, rock-pools and a koi pond by the front entrance - quite well done and “authentic”, mimicking a pavilion-ridden riverside dining experience commonly found in South-Eastern China – as per their “story”. The menu offers a wonderful and extensive set of Jiangzhe cuisine, from Southern China. The menu is printed in Chinese (Cantonese ? Mandarin ?) but the very attentive servers are available and eager to help with the selections nd recommendations, based on one’s choice, and heat level. A word of caution: the pot of House Special Fish Stew ($30) is absolutely delicious, but fiery hot. Even if requested “mild.” The serving was a huge, flat-ish bowl, which served the two of us for another two dinners at home. And the Crab Meat Sauce Noodle ($25) is to die for and go to the Heavenly Kingdom. Another notable choice is the Sweet & Sour Short Pork Ribs ($14)… which come in smelling just just just, and off the bone, as delightful lumps of succulent meat. And Atlantic Blue Crab ($14) is served cleaned and split up, in a flat dish, with an amazing sauce that we just couldn’t get enough of. Highly recommended ! We have gone back twice since then already, with various guests in tow … and all have loved the place.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Shanghainese cuisine
Cheli’s ambiance, food and service deserve 5 stars. My friend found this place on TikTok. We made reservations weeks in advance. Our table was ready when we arrived right in time. When you enter there’s a Koi pond in the front and there’s a dark narrow walk way. Each party has its own separate dining area. My friends and I ordered the following: Regular XLBs and crab meat Pea shoots with Chinese liquor sauce Braised eggplant with clams Hangzhou braised duck Tofu bites Grilled beef ribs Shanghai style fried rice Braised pork belly Garlic lobster Flavors and textures here were on point. Each dish had something unique about it. The braised eggplant and beef ribs were my favs. Plenty of clams in the eggplant and a touch of heat . The beef ribs had a cool presentation when the waiter heated up the dish in the aluminum foil. The rib sauce was so delicious we found ourselves adding it to our rice. Price wise everything here is reasonable. With the +10 dishes, 2 bottles of sake our tab came out to under $50 before tip for a party of 7. We left stuffed and really enjoyed our experience here. The only downside was since our party was large we got seated way in the back where the door leads outside. The cool windy breeze kept passing through. We found ourselves asking the waiters to keep the door closed. Overall, we had a really fun experience here. Dark intimate vibes with fun music playing. You get quality Shanghainese without breaking the bank.
Be the first to ReplyPopular restaurant with authentic Chinese Zhenjiang cuisine
This particular premise is located on the first floor of 1 Fulton Square and one of the most popular Authentic Chinese restaurants in the area. We had dinner at this restaurant, which we were lucky to get a table as soon as we walked in. The Zhenjiang cuisine is on the sweet side of Chinese entrees; not spicy as Szechuan dishes. The atmosphere is casual and decor is quiet Asian. This particular restaurant is cater mostly to Chinese diners that craved authentic cuisine. The service is okay, price is on the medium range. Bit crowded but we were glad to see the Flushing area restaurants are flourishing again after the disastrous Covid pandemic, which this area took a hard hit. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience and highly recommended for folks that crave authentic Zhenjiang cuisine.
