Strand of hair found in dish
Some dishes are nice but some are just so so. We ordered a beehoon lard as main. The waitress portion it out and I found a strain of hair in the beehoon while halfway eating it. Stop and tell the waitress. She didn't apologise and just orh. Quickly took the bowl away and gone. Evidence gone. No apologies given, nothing. We also did not want to rub it further but at least an apology. So what if Michelin star...
Be the first to ReplyOld school delicious experience.
Iโve not heard of this place until a friend suggested it to celebrate another friendโs birthday. The decor is a bit dated and kitschy but the food is yummy and delish even though it doesnโt look very pretty ๐. Everything we had was pretty amazing. I believe thereโs only 3 private dining rooms so the service was attentive and friendly. Chef Kang even popped in to say hello!!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food and Service
The restaurant food taste good. The food are served fast after we ordered , no need to wait long time. I like the restaurant environment, itโs neat and quiet .The restaurant people are very nice and friendly.
Be the first to ReplySearching for a great wan tan mee experience.
Went early in the morning. They were already tending to customers who pre-ordered in bulk. But they were fast to serve. Enjoyed the wan tan noodles ($6 per plate). The noodles were thin and crunchy and flavorful. The char side was juicy and tender. The wan tan soup was super delicious. Even the wan tan was done to perfection. I think I have found my ultimate wan tan noodle stall!!
Be the first to ReplyI have totally lost trust in Michelin guide
I have totally lost trust in the Michelin star guide. Is this a one star restaurant?? Ambience: private room with empty wine bottles around you perhaps to show that good wines were drank there. Tissue rolls very visible on rack near ceiling of room, untidy decor. Service: try any hawker Centre for same standard of service. Food: most importantly thatโs what diners go there for. Even their highlights like Soon Hock fish soup, bean curd skin, fried bee Hoon are perhaps one notch above an ordinary Chinese restaurant. Price: Run for your life for this quality of food. Total 1/5 is kind because I cannot rate 0.
Not sure whether he thinks heโs an acclaimed chef but maybe many diners drink too much and canโt tell that the food is so average for the cost
Food Quality Totally Not Worth
It is a small restaurant with 3 dining room limited seating. It call itself private kitchen which all the food dishes can be eaten at Zi Char store in coffeeshop around Singapore which taste much more better than them. Following are the dishes. Try 2 noodles; seafood beehoon and fried yuanyang noodle, char siew and spring onion ginger chicken. The chicken rice store chicken taste much more better. Their chicken no taste and meat not fully cooked. I ask for some pork lard and the waitress bring in a source plate of pork lard. She told me $6 for the pork lard. I try a piece and ask her to take back, totally over fried the pork lard and still have face to charge ppl. Overall not worth to try for the famous name. And it is super ex.
Be the first to Replygreat food, warm host
met the famous chef Kang, extremely hospitable; place had 3-4 private rooms.
food was great, but its not cheap, for this place is a Michelin 1 star.
we ordered the following dishes for 10 pax:
- fish soup
- cantonese char siew on hotplate
- fried pork belly in shrimp paste sauce
- hotplate tofu
- fried kailan
- curry jackfruit with rice crackers
- stir fried foie gras with asparagus
- dessert coconut icecream jelly and grass jelly
How did they get that Michelin star
16 pax dinner at the venerable chef Kang.
The char siew dish and suckling pig with glutinous rice were fantastic. The prawn noodles were the star of the show - the soup was so flavorful you'd think he boiled a thousand prawn heads for a small bowl of broth.
The rest of the dishes - the fish, vegetables, etc. were disappointing. You can get better at almost any respectable Chinese restaurant with more than 6 tables.
Service - Terribly slow. Each course had AT LEAST a 20 minute interval. One had a 45 minute wait. This isn't French food, it's just atas zhi char, bring it all on! We figured it could be chef Kang himself walking around drinking wine with the guests that he forgets to cook.
Not worth the wait, definitely not worthy of the star.
crispy pork belly was awesome
all was great, chef was so friendly, I love the crispy pork belly. We ordered fish soup which is very famous there. Next time will try other dishes. And price is not cheap.
Be the first to ReplyNot a Michelin one star experience
Wanted to bring my mum to a Michelin one star restaurant and this looks interesting - limited tables with advance booking one month before, famous chef.
Started off on a wrong note when I called to make reservation. Reading how popular they are, I nicely asked for their first weekend lunch available because my timing was flexible. The next five minutes was complaints from the other side of phone that I need to make up my mind, if not call back again because they have limited tables and I should not keep changing my date. When I said I have three pax, the other side exclaimed like it is too few people to fill up their table. I wanted to just hang up but stayed on to give the food a chance. I think service at a hawker centre is better than this. Few days before my lunch, the restaurant called me to confirm and service was better.
We walked into the restaurant which did not look nice. It was not spacious neither and all we hear is audible sound of air con. As we were only with three of us, we were seated right at the door (bigger groups have more private rooms) and in front of the kitchen. Service was ok. We ordered their famous fish soup, char siew (pre ordered when they called), asparagus with egg white and scallops, and fried Mian sian. Fish soup was very good (solid good taste although not wow) but the deep fried fish that comes with it hardly had any taste - this cost $98 so I was expecting a nice deep fried fish if they serve us (else throw the fish away). The asparagus and noodle was ok - nothing special. The char siew was good but not wow either. I did not feel I ate at a Michelin one star restaurant, not in terms of quality and creativity of the dishes Nor in terms of dining experience or service. Total bill for three of us comes to around $300. With this price I am better off at another restaurant. One time to try but I donโt think I will come back again.

An absolute must : do not miss
Singapore is the ultimate foodie's paradise. In this paradise Chef Kang stands out. A modest venue in a modest street but once the plates start coming a perfect experience of the senses. Everything is there: the flavors, the aroma, the texture, the balance, the journey, the story. Best meal ever!
Be the first to ReplyKinda Disappointed
A group of us (6 pax) went there last night to celebrate a birthday, we ordered Chef's famous soup (pig's stomach & chicken, sweet sauced prawns, scallops, famed egg white with veggie, coffee pork & ended with the beehoon.
Here's my take:
Soup - standard had dropped somewhat since I had it a year ago. The pig's stomach were very 'thin' and few to start with.
Prawns - very ordinary, no wow, any zhi char outlet can whip up the same or better
Scallops - very fresh, but small sized and small portion (only 2 per pax)
Egg White with veggie - this was very good
Coffee pork - rather ordinary (again, any zhi char's fare), small bite size portion (also 2 pieces per pax)
Beehoon - it was above average
Ambience - below average. But to be fair, Chef Kang is famed for his food not ambience.
Service - it was very good, attentive and responsive
Pricing - way overpriced
I expected a 'wow' experience especially since its a One Star Michellin restaurant
