So disappointing but no change!
Had lunch the other day in the Brassiere, chose the fish and chips. Wish I hadn’t it arrived just a small piece of cod in greasy batter with cup of chips which were mostly small bits and pieces of chip and tartare sauce! That was it for £18.95! The fish, which I dragged out of its greasy shell was quite slimy most off putting and tasted of nothing no seasoning nothing. I am completely baffled how any chef can make a ‘bad’ fish and chips! Will not be going there again very sad as they have a rich market round them in that area!
Be the first to ReplyTop class Men du Jour at lunchtime
I have been several times over the years but this was the best experience by far. My host and I both opted for the Menu du Jour at £38.95 for 3 courses. We started with Iberico ham croquettes on a bed of pea puree, pea shoots and aged parmesan. The three croquettes were served hot with a crispy coating and a velvety smooth cream inside. Lovely flavours with the pea puree and pea shoots providing textural contrasts, Four our main course we took the Roast pork loin with crispy anna potatoes, cavolo nero and apple puree. The meat was really soft and tender whilst the potatoes provided crunch. Great combinations. Although i am not normally a dessert fan, i adore blood red Sicilain oranges in season and these provided the base for the wonderful lemon posset with sesame tuile. This was a fantastic creation for which the kitchen deserves massive praise. This was a seriously good 3-course lunch that was definitely to Michelin standards.
Be the first to ReplyThankyou for another wonderful lunch!!
Chapter One is the best restaurant in our area bar none!! My wife, my two daughters and I were treated to yet another exemplary experience yesterday when we enjoyed a fabulous lunch to celebrate two birthdays. The food was wonderful - exact cooking with beautiful presentation. To pick a highlight is so difficult, but if pressed we would select the fabulous desserts and delightful petit fours presented as birthday treats. As usual the service was of the highest level - efficient and yet so friendly. A huge thanks to Marcel, Emma, Maxime and the rest of the team. You have created a beautiful atmosphere to complement the food! It's a pity we could not thank the talented kitchen team in person. The person who made the rosemary focaccia is a superb baker. Of course this experience was not cheap - altogether we paid £370 which included 4 a la carte menus, 3 cocktails and a great bottle of Australian Pinot Noir. Thankfully our pocket was eased by the previous purchase of some Christmas gift vouchers! We will be back!!

Fabulous restaurant, food always tasty, service always great.. a bit expensive but you pay for great service and food so it’s ok. Nice place always going back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Saturday dinner at the Brasserie
Another great meal at Chapter 1. We were in the Brasserie and the food was delicious, the atmosphere was buzzy but relaxed. All the staff really look after their guests (special shout out to Antonella). Will definitely go again
Be the first to ReplyFantastic, but boring for vegetarians
As always lunch was lovely . Service was top notch . However, I do think the vegetarian option on the Brasserie menu has been mushroom risotto for years ? Why not put something vegetarian on the Josper grill ?
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great vibes
First time I’ve been Chapter One after hearing great things. We went to the brasserie rather than the restaurant and the food was high quality. The steak ciabatta was very nice as well as my partners fish and chips. The service as expected was very good. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing and certainly recommend it. Typically expensive although I would come here on special occasions.
Be the first to ReplyFaultless. Fabulous. I want more.
Haven’t been since lockdown. Wonderful to find the place serving consistently great food and impeccable service. Had the menu of the day with a bottle of wine and coffees - £140 including service. Ab fab starter, main course of pork with the crispiest of crackling, a nice selection of unusual cheeses. Will be back for more.

As usual fantastic service and tasty food. Recommend the vegetarian option. Even our waiter knew where my favourite table was. Now that is special.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a fabulous restaurant
This was the most wonderful Sunday lunch. Everything about Chapter One is sublime. From the sublime service to the truly exceptional food. This restaurant is not cheap but is worth every penny. A very special place.
Be the first to ReplyGorgeous food ,kind ,professional staff
I'm not used to fine dining and was a little apprehensive of a visit but absolutely need not have been .
Staff were welcoming and a well oiled professional team,in the background ,on hand before you knew you needed them and friendly .
Food was fabulous -the mushroom veloute was a dream ,the risotto that came with my salmon was heaven .
Pleasant ,light filled room with generous spacing between tables .
30th birthday not allowed to have one ballon up.
I’ve always enjoyed coming to chapter one. This was our third visit. Service with the drinks was a little slow but the food was excellent. Only problem was they wouldn’t let us put the balloon up. It kind of ruined the meal to be honest. We weren’t in the way of other tables or in the pathway of the waiters / waitresses. So I’ve no idea why they objected to it so it puts me off going again to be honest.
Be the first to ReplyPresentation, price and food were terrific
My host and I looked at the a la carte menu but decided that the 3-course Menu de Jour at £34.95 (incl vat) and with service optional at 12.5% represented phenomenal value and so it proved to be.
The freshly baked assorted bread was first class as was the salted butter and there was no problem in asking for a refill. I started with smoked haddock brandade (emulsion of the fish, olive oil and potato) with slightly runny hen's egg. Superb flavours and I would have welcomed rather more brandade!
The main course was a Venison Pithivier – nicely browned puff pastry encasing a hearty filling of coarsely minced meat sitting on a creamy curry flavoured sauce. No need for rice or potatoes!!
Finally, for dessert I chose the Crème Brulee with a moderately crisp crust.
All the dishes were really well presented to highlight colour combinations and the fresh ingredients. Absolutely top-class work by the kitchen
Throughout the service was attentive and professional and so lunch at Chapter One proved a complete success and I will be returning soon.
Immaculate service, imaginative food
Adult family lunch for 3 at this very pleasant restaurant. No shortage of staff, all well-trained and polite. Those little things like real linen napery, cold water without asking, non-bendable cutlery.
I had an eel and salmon terrine starter - very tasty and perfect texture, roast beef with real roast potatoes and some lovely vegetables including sliced red cabbage sauted in sherry. My companions chose different meals but were equally satisfied.
If I had any cause for complaint at all it was the giant and rather tasteless yorkshire pudding (no better than any these days) and the sorbet was really ice-cream.
Very civilised and pristine loos.
For about £40 a head money well spent.
High standards maintained!!
After a 6 month gap we finally returned to Chapter One for lunch, using a gift voucher we treated ourselves to for Christmas. It is getting repetitive to once again say how much we enjoyed the wonderful food and exemplary service. Food highlights were the starters and desserts. My wife thought the Cullen Skink veloute was outstanding, as was my skate and smoked eel terrine. For dessert my blood orange soufflé was wonderfully tasty with its melting sorbet and chocolate fudge sauce. The staff are all great - we enjoyed talking to Emma, Hari and Maxime. Because the Thursday lunchtime was quiet they had the time to chat but were never pushy. Prices have gone up since our last visit but the experience still represents good value. We dined from the £51.95 a la carte menu and had a delicious bottle of Riesling from our favourite wine area, Alsace. Will definitely be back!!
Be the first to ReplyConsistently delivers an excellent all round dining experience
It had been three years since we last had lunch here. Apart from a decorative makeover, very little had changed with the restaurant itself. There had been a couple of changes though with the menus. Out has gone the Tasting Menu and in has come a Menu Du Jour. We always thought the Tasting Menu was good value but not what most people wanted at lunchtime. The Menu Du Jour is an excellent addition. We chose our 3 courses from it as the dishes appealed more that the A La Carte. All courses were excellent and very good value. One option that I would like to see is the option for having a cheese course as well as a desert (French style). Overall, we had a great time and will be back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Christmas lunch
Excellent food, friendly service and great value. Lovely venue that offers a wonderful ambiance. Felt very safe and secure in these times of covid.
Be the first to ReplyNice Sunday lunch
Came here for lunch on Sunday, the fixed menu was very good as was the service. I had rabbit pasty to start which I enjoyed immensely, the rest of the meal was of good quality too
Just one small point to make one of the dishes had a chip on it which should have been spotted before it left the kitchen but as it only contained the Turkish delight I let it go
Good atmosphere- bad food
We visited this restaurant in December as a group of 8, 4 children and 4 adults. Initially, we were impressed by the interior design and Christmas decorations, but our positive attitude did not last for long. The service was not too bad, however it was definitely not worth the £50 service charge included with the bill. When it comes to the food, we were all shocked by the poor standard of what was in front of us. Of course, the food will not be awful when you pay £450 for a dinner, but it was definitely not what we expected. Expecting Michelin star level food, we were very disappointed by the cuisine. Once again, the atmosphere is pleasant and the staff do their job well, but the food is VERY overpriced. I would recommend visiting the restaurant for a good atmosphere around Christmas time, and not for the food.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing
I've opened this account especially to leave this review as I wanted to express what an amazing night we had! My partner booked this as a surprise for us! We ate in the Brasserie area and it was just lush!! Food was amazing and so were the cocktails!! Our waitress Kirsty was TOP NOTCH!! She was so down to earth and her service was AMAZING despite the fact you could clearly see how busy she was however she delivered excellent service to us and all the other tables with a smile on her face!! The food was just out of this world and will definitely be making a return!!!
