Came for their mushroom and waffles after recently swapping
Came for their mushroom and waffles after recently swapping to a pescatarian diet. Definitely missed the crisp bite of a good fried chicken over waffles and was excited to see that they had the dish with a twist to it. In terms of taste, I thought dishes were definitely far too salty to the point that I had to peel off the fried exterior of my mushrooms to avoid the salt. Staff were sweet but service was incredibly slow and the ambience was so loud that it was difficult to hear what others on my table were saying. Seats were also uncomfortably close to one another.
Be the first to ReplySo Cadence has been on my list to try for a while now.
I finally have time on my most recent trip to the city to check them out. Super excited on a Friday night to indulge in some delicious food and cocktails, I didn't wear a crazy heel in case parking wasn't nice to us. This is NYC!! Circle the block once come back there's a spot directly in front of the address yes! The universe is on our side. We walk in immediately greeted and seated by a lovely hostess. I take a look at the menu and notice the menu reads Ladybird's hmm did we end up in the wrong place?!? We absolutely did 2 different restaurants with the same address owned by the same restaurant group. We tell our server he comps the bottle of sparkling water we ordered and has someone walk us over to Cadence. Impressive!! He has a conversation with the staff at Cadence, they seat us immediately present menus and let us the kitchen will be closing in a few take a look at the menu and order. No worries I'm starved! We order the smoked grits (meh), the southern fried lasagna (so yummy), jerk mac and cheese (decent), maple buttermilk cornbread (no bueno, way too mushy), and the potato salad (not bad but not great) pickles weren't evenly distributed throughout the dish. We also had cocktails both were very good our waiter recommended a drink for me as they were out of what I would have liked to order. Each dish came out as they were ordered that's fine we were sharing and yes I was hungry so keep them rolling in. By the time our final dish arrived the cornbread another server comes over and mentions they'll be closing soon to let them know if we need anything boxed. We didn't need anything boxed just enough time to finish what we ordered. Next we're greeted by our original server to let us know the same thing. Um guys we're just trying to finish dinner you all are welcome to take any empty dishes on the table. We've wrapped up dinner settled the check now finishing our cocktails with a bit of conversation. At this point someone from the kitchen comes to our table to say we need to leave within 10 mins they need to start closing. I'm a bit irritated since we no longer have any dishes on the table only glasses and the bartender is still cleaning the bar. I've been at restaurants in the past during closing I am normally greeted to be advised the restaurant will be closing shortly we are welcome to finish our meal just be aware they may begin cleaning. Cadence basically told us we need to leave, such a turn off for a chic restaurant. Literally no food pics as we were diving in as the food arrived.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best vegan restaurants I've been to! Tasty
One of the best vegan restaurants I've been to! Tasty cuisine, timely service, with a nice ambience. The food comes out as soon as it's ready. I liked this particularly because our food was fresh and hot and we were able to sample everything without being overwhelmed. We sat at the bar. (The only annoyance I had was my chair was a little wobbly.) I love the fact that the bartender was very engaging and the drinks were consistent. (Love the Franklin Green) I would 100% dine here again. Oh, I would say make a reservation because they were pretty busy.

So phreaking good! I wanted to go to Cadence for Valentine's Day, but reservations were booked up by the time I went to make one. Lucky me, My bf surprised me with dinner at Cadence for my birthday a couple weeks later! From the cool, comfy vibe to the dddddelicious food, I left wanting nothing! On the way out we noticed that there was a sister restaurant right next door. Will have to try that next time. I got the mushroom waffle- lovedddd, my bf got the mushroom burger-loveddd as well. We also shared the must-have arancini, and the cornbread. Adorable ambiance and staff. Definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyThe food far exceeded my expectations.
I'm newly plant based and a true southern women new to New York. Cadence was a suggestion from a coworker and I must say she was spot on with this spot. I came with a friend who isn't vegan and we both literally spoke with our eyes because words didn't give the fried lasagna justice. As the designated Macaroni and cheese baker in my Very southern, very Black, very judgy soul food snob of a family, baby Chefs kiss to what the chef was able to curate as a vegan Mac and cheese it was creamy, flavorful and just an overall comforting dish that we truly should e ordered two of. The palm cakes were good as well as were the drinks. This place is small but mighty, packed with good vibes and even better flavor profiles
Be the first to ReplyI've dined at Cadence twice in the past two weeks.
My first experience was on a weeknight and I would rate it 5 stars. My second experience was on a Saturday evening and I'd rate it 3 stars. I love the concept of this restaurant! As someone on a dairy and soy free diet, it's amazing to visit a restaurant and be able to eat everything on the menu. Ordered: Sweet Emma ($18)- this cocktail was perfect in my view. If you like fruity and sweet drinks, you'll enjoy this! The cola extract adds something a little different in a positive way. It was great both times I ordered it. Mahalia's Gospel ($18)- this cocktail was interesting! It had passion fruit and different wines/liquors. It was strong! Jambalaya Arancini ($16)- these had great flavor! They were creamy in texture on the inside and the outside was crispy. They had a tasty creamy aioli and some micro greens. My first time dining they arrived piping hot. The second time they were barely warm. When they are hot, they are phenomenal! Collard Green Wraps ($22)- these were tasty! Filled with succotash. The broth was too salty in my opinion. Also the broth was hard to share as I was dining with a friend. Buffalo Oyster Mushroom sandwich ($26)- this sandwich was the star of the show! Wow! Just wow. I had it with the sweet barbecue sauce. My first time dining the sandwich arrived hot and it was phenomenal. The mushroom was crispy yet the inside was tender. It had a creamy ranch and perfectly ripe avocado on a pretzel bun. I dreamed about this sandwich, so I came back! My second experience was quite disappointing. My sandwich wasn't hot and was not nearly as good as it was the week before. After my two dining experiences my views on Cadence are mixed. I understand it's challenging to manage a completely packed restaurant and unfortunately this impacted my experience on Saturday night. This was an expensive night out for a special occasion and it missed the mark. I'm not sure if I'll return but if I do, I'll update my review.

Food was delicious ,very quaint place will definitely be back Next time I'll do the wine flight
Be the first to ReplyI came here on a Tuesday for Galentine's Day at 6:30 PM.
The place was fairly empty. By the time I left at around 7:30 PM/ 8 PM the place was completely full. I was 10 minutes late and I was able to communicate that through text and get a response. my friend and I ordered wine, cornbread, she ordered the mushrooms with waffles and I ordered the buffalo oyster mushroom sandwich on a pretzel bun with a side of cut pickles. Both the cornbread and the sandwich were very delicious and filling. I wish that the sandwich came with a side salad just to balance out the sandwich and especially for the price it is very expensive for what it is. A bit more vegetables and sauce in the sandwich would've been great. The fried oysters were huge. The cornbread was great. It had butter and a side of mango jam. I also had a glass of orange wine. It arrived after the food arrived. I don't know if it was a mistake or not regardless, it seemed like a kind gesture that I was not charged for the glass. It also took a while to get our order in, I don't recall taking that long to get our food. However, there was only one server and one bartender it would be a little nicer if there was one another server. I do remember it also took a while for them to take our credit cards for payment. the place is very pretty and we sat in a corner booth however, there were crumbs all over the seat. I love trying vegetarian food and supporting female black owned business, but I would highly suggest adjusting the service to be a bit more prompt.
Be the first to ReplyI had the jambalaya arancini and Southern fried lasagna.
Both dishes were solid. I liked the crispy texture on both. The jambalaya was probably my favorite - the rice on the inside was comforting and flavorful, and the aioli on top was a great accompaniment. The lasagna was very rich and savory, but had a bit of a bitter note that left me with more of a mixed impression. I ended up waiting quite a while for the lasagna to come out as well. For a total cost of over $60 after tax and tip, I'm not sure the experience was worth it overall.

Cute place with modern mid-century details, drinks were very good, food was yummy. Although would have appreciated slightly bigger portions for the prices. We had the arincinis, salad, and buffalo bbq oyster burger, which was very well seasoned and delicious. We ended on a sweet note with the cobbler, which was yummy as well. Service was wonderful, we appreciated the periodic check ins and suggestions!

The food was so tasty! My friend and I split the cornbread and okra. She got the lasagna and I got the crab cake. All 4 were extremely delicious!!!!The ambiance was great. Very intimate, great lighting, and good use of space. The service was also great. All the staff were friendly and helpful.
Be the first to ReplyPretty good food.
The fried lasagna was the only thing I didn't love. It was tasty but kind of just tasted like impossible meat so would not get again. The cornbread was really good! The chicken sandwich was good but I wish it was crispier. Would definitely come back and try other stuff on the menu. It was extremely dark in the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGreat concept with even better execution.
The food I grew up on made in an elevated vegan manner. Beautiful space and welcoming staff. So much flavor in the sauce accompanying the fried lasagna, definitely the star dish.

After eating here my husband said he will never go to any vegan places again with me. When we arrive right away the hostess was not warm at all after we informed we had reservations . We sit down and the place os very dark , my husband orders the baked lasagna and potato salad while I order the gumbo and okra . The potato salad comes out with the gumbo . The gumbo has no flavor whatsoever , my husband who is black and family is creole as well was complaining the whole time . Now the potato salad was good probably the only thing decent on the menu . After about 30 minutes and watching the people that came after us get all there food we finally get the baked lasagna and the okra. What a huge disappointment and now I have to hear this men mouth all night long how bad the food was. Oh now let me talk about the service, I really felt like this women did not like us. At first she was nice but was hard as hell to get her attention, when asking about the menu she gave limited responses and was quick to leave. When we get the bill she gives us the wrong bill , my husband informed her and she snatched the bill out of his hand. Me and my husband work our asses off and we just want a nice night out with some good food . I am writing this review for all those married couples that bust there ass and just want to have a good time as well as a good menu. Just need to warn people this is not the place to go to
Be the first to ReplyI wish I could leave three and a half stars.
As others have said, there are pros and cons. I went with five friends last week as we'd all heard great things. The pros: almost all of the food was extremely good. The lasagna and the palm cake were standouts, but just about everything was inventive and skillfully executed. The service was also very friendly and enthusiastic. The room is very comfortable and the tables well laid-out, meaning that even on a very busy night it didn't feel cramped. Music was great, too. For the level of cooking, the prices for the food were fair. The cons: The jambalaya - which was the first dish to arrive - was tiny (none of the dishes were all that large, which made the server's description of the menu as "family style" seem strange - I'm not sure they know what that term means) and didn't have much taste to it. As others have pointed out, the arrival of the food was a bit bizarre. Some items came immediately - which covered the folks who'd ordered those - but others took 15-20 minutes. And, to be clear, this isn't a complaint about waiting 15-20 minutes - that's no problem at all, I'll wait 45 minutes and not think twice about it - it's about the fact that some people had food and others didn't. Not an awful thing, but I'd expect a bit more coordination from the kitchen. And, finally, the wine prices. I'd checked their website before going and saw on the menu that the least expensive bottle of wine was $58. Now I understand restaurant wine markup and so get that one will pay triple the retail price for a bottle of $19 wine. I don't love it, but it's how restaurants pay their bills. Unfortunately, the online menu was out of date and so we arrived to find that the same wine was now $70/bottle (and I don't think there was anything less expensive). So - adding tax and tip - that's $90 for a bottle of $19 wine. Which, to me, just seems like gouging. So that's not great and the fact that the website isn't up to date about that re-pricing is REALLY not great. Anyway, as a result, we just opted not to drink. OK-ish for us but, I'd think, not OK at all for the restaurant. So yes, go for the food but - if you don't feel like spending a fortune on the alcohol - go for a drink somewhere else beforehand.
Be the first to ReplyThe experience was superb! I went on a vegan expedition
The experience was superb! I went on a vegan expedition with Cadence. If you have never tried vegan food this restaurant is the perfect place to try it for the first time. They specializes in Southern style food. The ambiance is kinda bougie but not pretentious. It feels like you're in a sophisticated lounge. Had the gumbo appetizer and it was a bit rough. A ton of okra. It felt like it was missing an ingredient, I personally was not a fan. It got way better from here. That Collar Green Wrap was divine. The broth it sits has the same richness of a pot liquor. My main was the Buffalo Oyster Mushroom Sandwich. This had to be the most meaty, well constructed mushroom sandwiches I ever even. Top 5 vegan main I ever ate. I highly recommend. The oyster mushroom is the same on mushroom/waffle dish. The meal ended with the cornbread. Another must item. It was perfect way to finish. Incredible spot, they also have a nice cocktail menu that I can't wait to explore next time I visit.

I really wanted to love this place and may give it a second shot. The server told us that we should order 2 items per person and the items were made to share. This was an odd fib. Many of the items like the oyster burger, gumbo, grits are downright awkward to share. You also don't need 2 per person. Not sure if that was his attempt to up-sell?Also, I get what the other reviews mean about the host. When I came in he was mid-text & didn't really acknowledge me until he was done even after I said hello. Not a big deal but awkward.Food:Palm Cake: 5/5 beautiful blend of flavors!Oyster Mushroom Burger: 3/5 it was douched in sauce, you couldn't even taste the mushroom. I did enjoy the pretzel bun and when I wiped some of the sauce off, the mushrooms were cooked to perfection. The hot sauce used was actually pretty good too but WAY too much poured on.Okra: 3/5, tempura style, not really seasonedGrits: 4/5 (didn't try them but my friend enjoyed it)Collard Green Wrap: 3/5, it was fineCobbler: 1/5, it was so sweet and syrup forward nobody at the table could eat it

Everything was top tier from the atmosphere/decor to the service and food. Definitely recommend this restaurant for a date night. The mushroom and waffle was good however, I suggest that if you aren't a fan of tangy buffalo sauce, ask to have the sauce on the side because the mushroom soaks up all of the sauce and the buffalo sauce kills your taste buds. Absolutely everything else on the menu was delicious however, the menu is short which wasn't a issue for me because I like taste testing. I tried everything ! The plates were small, enough for 2 to share if your ordering more than one dish.
Be the first to ReplyI've been looking to explore more vegan spots in the city
I've been looking to explore more vegan spots in the city and Cadence was at the top of my list. The vibe is super chill and easy going, and the seating is nice and private.1. Lasagna- the lasagna was my boyfriends favorite. It was crunchy, tomato-y, and packed with lots of great flavor.2. Cornbread- the cornbread is pretty crumbly and the flavors were alright but it grows on you. I found myself snacking on it a lot between bites. 3. Buffalo mushroom- such an amazing and delicious burger! My bf thought the sauce was pretty heavy and spicy, but I thought that's what made it special. Genuinely tasted like a classic Buffalo chicken sandwich. Definniiiitely recommend. 4. Fried okra- nothing special here. I wouldn't get it again. Overall I thought this was a great date spot or a place to catch up with friends. I don't think it fits the vibe of a big party. The staff seemed a bit dismissive but they were still nice. Highly recommend coming here and dipping your toe into some incredible vegan eats.
Be the first to ReplyWOW!!! Cadence was an amazing experience.
Great service, great ambiance and excellent food. The dishes are meant to be shared, we ordered 4 dishes and all were delicious. Definitely coming back to Cadence!
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I went to Cadence to celebrate my birthday
My husband and I went to Cadence to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. We LOVED every minute. Our server, Maverick, was beyond friendly and helpful. He explained the food is served family- style and gave us some recommendations. We went with the Southern Fried Lasagna, Fried Oyster Mushrooms and Waffle, Maple Buttermilk Cornbread, Cobbler and the special Sweet Potato Pie. Everything was amazing. SO flavorful and fresh. The lasagna was a pleasant surprise - it was like an Italian egg roll and the bolognese sauce was a perfect compliment to the lasagna. The mushroom and waffle had a buffalo sauce which was spicy but not overpowering. It was served with a lavender maple sauce which was a delicious savory/sweet combo. It's almost hard to believe everything was vegan. The staff brought out dessert with a massive sparkler in it while the song Celebration played in the background. Awesome experience from beginning to end!! Really can't recommend Cadence enough.
Be the first to ReplyWords cannot describe how great the food is here.
We tried the Palm cake, fried oyster, and Lasagna. I wish I had more room in my stomach tonight, but I will definitely be back. The wine flight was also great. The wines are from black owned vineyards and the waiters will give you plenty of information about them.
Be the first to ReplyAfter hearing about this restaurant in so many online
After hearing about this restaurant in so many online articles, I came to try the raved-about fried lasagna. Unfortunately, we came too late, and they had just sold out. Instead, we ordered the collard green wraps, wedge salad, and jackfruit sliders. All in all, wasn't a bad experience at all, though we didn't try the most popular dishes just because we weren't really feeling fried food. Most of the menu is fried though, so be forewarned. The collard green wraps were a tomato and beet filling wrapped in collard greens, stewed in a sweet and sour miso-esque broth. The inside was strongly beety, so be forewarned if you don't like beets. The broth was very salty but complemented the collard greens well. This was a nice light starter, good for anyone trying to find a healthy option on the menu. The wedge salad was my partner's favorite, as he typically enjoys iceberg lettuce, bacon, and ranch salads (he is not vegan). The shiitake mushrooms on this were fried and flavored just like a bacon bit, and the diced pears were a wonderful sweet textural addition to the salad. I'm not a huge fan of ranch personally, but I don't hold it against the salad as I do think it was very well crafted. The jackfruit sliders were super small, and just two for $18, but were piquant and tasty. The bread to filling ratio was definitely too high (too much pretzel bun), but it didn't feel dry or bland since the jackfruit itself was super well spiced and not dry at all. There was a decent amount of chipotle mayo to tie it all together, but definitely not enough slaw and filling. Wish there was more, it was so good! We asked a man sitting next to us what he thought of the fried lasagna after he had almost finished his meal. He said that it was the highlight of the meal so far, which we thought was encouraging. However, when we asked him if it was worth coming back for since we ourselves missed out this time, he said no. Take that as you will, just one person's opinion out of many. But I would definitely not mind bringing non vegans here to try indulgent vegan food in a proudly Black owned restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing atmosphere, amazing service and out of this world
Amazing atmosphere, amazing service and out of this world food. Plates are to share and I recommend 4-5 dishes for two. My favorites were the mushroom grits and the collard green rolls. Can wait to return to try other dishes we didn't get to last time.

..... is delicious!!!!! I could eat here everyday. It's super light and not heavy food. I love that it's next door to lady bug because you can go to both restaurants and get different meals. And it's all vegan which is a plus!!!!
