Bulrush Bristol Reviews from The Last Year
Amazing food let down by the service
This was such a disappointing experience. The food was amazing, the dishes were perfectly cooked, creative and with amazing flavours. The service however was awful. It started well with the first three courses coming out quickly but then everything slowed down. We would have our dirty plates in front of us for 10-15 minutes after we had finished eating despite staff walking past us and seeing them. When our plates were finally cleared it would then be another 10-15 minutes before the next course arrived. This is not what you want on a 10 course taster. The experience was so slow we were there for 4 hours and actually decided to skip the cheese course and coffees just so we could get out sooner. Not the standard I would expect from a Michelin star restaurant.
One of the best Michelin star restaurants we’ve been to
Incredible 9 course menu, exemplary service and a warm authenticity that made the evening truly special. Service: Knowledgeable and friendly team, from the wine to each individual dish. We loved that it seemed each team member wanted us to learn about the dish and its ingredients rather than just state what it was. No sense of pretentiousness, but rather a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. Food: Each course was inviting, delicate and well- balanced. The monkfish, champagne sauce and Jerusalem Artichoke dish, the canapés/small bites (croustade, smoked lamb, XO doughnut) and sea buckthorn Madeline were favourites. We placed this experience as one of our favourite Michelin star restaurants, without question.
Underwhelming
The service was ok - the waiter forgot a lot of things, plates, glasses, filling our glasses. The food started well but nothing memorable. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere, the toilets were shabby. Desserts were not sweet at all. Leaving you wanting that sugar hit at the end of a meal. We also had to wait downstairs with other guests to pay and then wait again for someone to go and find our coats, in the way of other customers eating. Just a bit unorganised.
Well worth the star - modern, fresh, delicious
Outstanding food and service, great value. We went for my wife’s birthday. Great range of dishes: modern, inventive and intricate, high quality ingredients. We did the wine pairing which we felt complemented the food well and added an element. We were well looked after by all the staff but particularly sommelier Alan. Standout dish for us was the stone bass with champagne and mussel sauce, Orkney scallop and fallow deer also wonderful. We will be going back.
A set menu without choices.
We arrived with high hopes - a Michelin star - and expecting a worthy successor to Bistro 21 and Juniper. Pleasantly surprised that we were not alone at a lunchtime, it was comfortably busy. It is a big risk when you are offering just a set lunch, with no choices, it needs to suit everybody and at the same time to surprise and delight them too. Personally we dislike the nose to toe philosophy, even if it is not fully implemented and the idea of grating the left over cheese rinds into a sauce discouraged my wife, and that was before she tried to eat their venison platter. I have 30 years experience in food and we have eaten in many of the best restaurants in the country - we lament Gavroche's passing this month. I have to say, none of the courses were memorable or appetising and some, the venison and the pudding were difficult to eat. The consomme was off putting.Everybody else in the restaurant seemed to be happy with their meals so perhaps we are the odd ones out - the madeleines at the end of the meal were great.
Delicious!
Super restaurant; delicious food which has been carefully curated and cooked. Friendly, helpful and efficient staff. Tasting menu highlights that I’m still thinking of include: consommé, duck macaron, wagyu spread, beef croustade, tempura scallop, cheese ice cream, Sea Buckthorn Madeline, candied shemiji. I’ve recommended Bulrush to lots of people already… and it’s only been 48 hours!
Nice enough, but left feeling underwhelmed.
Visiting Bristol we’d thought we’d make a special evening of it. Unfortunately, we came away slightly underwhelmed. Firstly, the wine we ordered was out of stock. The upstairs attic room was cold so much so most of the the other guests were putting their coats on. The room was supplied with the smallest of fan heaters that took the chill off, but for this level or restaurant it’s a school boy error. Emphasis was definitely on presentation. On the whole pleasant flavours and interesting ingredients. Some courses lacked cohesion of flavour and was either over or under seasoned. Extra special course of tuna was a disappointment and the wagu fat ruined the taste and texture of the tuna. Nice selection of English sourced wines and spirits which is great to see. Reasonable value for money but the £45 service charge was a bit hard to swallow when we had to pour our own wine and water and were never asked if we wanted a second bottle. Nice, but better out there and wouldn’t return.
Imaginative flavours and presentation
Thank you Bulrush for a fabulous experience. We all enjoyed the creative flavour combinations and imaginative presentation of the 9 course tasting menu. 2 of us had the standard menu, and 2 pescatarian. I'd perhaps just comment that the pescatarian one had a greater emphasis on cheesy, creamy things than I'd ideally go for, though that's just personal taste. The service was relaxed and unfussy, yet professional. Unlike some previous reviewers we were very very happy to spend several hours enjoying all those courses, and would have been disappointed if it had been any less time. We treated ourselves to the wine pairings which were varied and all interesting and good quality. A memorable treat of an evening.
I haven’t felt puke in my mouth from food since I was a child …
Feeling a tad violated after my experience. The restaurant poses as high end cuisine but they completely forgot to taste their dishes. Granted, if you like vinegar, fermented yeast or marmite you may like it, but I don’t so had difficulty keeping the food down. True, the experience was one of a kind, but a kind I would never want to repeat. There was not a single dish from ones I tried that I wanted a second bite of or would ever want to taste again. Fusion of horrible and disgusting. Staff was lovely though. We were lucky to have escaped half way through to Bravas where food actually tasted nice. Cannot recommend and will not recommend, the only star is for great service.
Great food excellent service
The 9 course tasting menu was excellent, some inspired combinations and tastes we've never experienced before. Only a slight bit of confusion on the reservation when we arrived but They went above and well beyond to apologise when they didn't need to. Service was great, and paced just right. Granted its not a place we'd come to that often, but it's a treat that we'd repeat again for sure

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
