Seafood Jose Andres
Seafood focused Jose Andres restaurant. Good cocktails, and great food. On whacker drive. The Brussels sprouts on lemon puree with lime foam were a shocking delight.

Very noisy. We could barely hear each other . We went early but the place was already packed with pre-theater crowds. One of us wanted to try the $65 tapas “ tasting menu” but we were told everyone at the table had to order one as well…. So we went a la carte. Food was ok with decent selection of seafood tapas. Pricey place.

This was our second time, looked forward to returning. Returned because of the food which is excellent. However, our experience does not deserve a return. Our service was just awful. Waited 40 minutes for a cocktail. We were seated outdoors. There were rats everywhere near our table outside the restaurant. If they are so close there must be some in it. Disappointed because we do enjoy the food.

This is a must do restaurant in Chicago! The tapas style food was delicious and the presentation was gorgeous. The service was outstanding as well. I had no idea that salt air on a margarita and lime air on Brussel sprouts and key lime pie could taste so good!

Amazing experience, we came for lunch and had a great time. You must start with the himachi cones! The food here is always amazing and the servers super attentive. Apart from this the decorations, fun atmosphere and location tie this place all together to be a perfect spot for lunch or dinner.

Bar Mar was such a great place to have Dinner in Chicago! We shared Jose’s Small Bites and I was blown away by the presentation, taste and lovely variety! The wine was excellent as well!
Be the first to ReplyGreat ambiance and amazing service, BUT…
Wonderful ambiance and amazing service - just what you would expect at any José Andrés restaurant, but the comparisons stop there. Did the $75 tasting menu and while there were a few exceptions (himachi cones, endives & boquerones, and flan) most of the tapas dishes were not what you would expect of a JA restaurant (have dined at Zaytinya in DC - absolutely amazing). In addition ordered the sardines and mackerel from the à la carte menu and was terribly disappointed - the presentation was a play on and resembled a “out of can” look… unfortunately tasted like that too… In hindsight, may have had a better experience if we were selective and ordered off the main menu.

If you have a taste for Spanish cuisine with a strong emphasis on seafood, this is the place to be! The staff was absolutely wonderful, and although they may have been a bit slow, the service was excellent. I'm definitely planning on returning in the future!

Jose Andres rocks! Still haven't seen any fine dining establishments that were not to my liking. This is mostly seafood place, in one of the office towers well located in the Loop on Wacker Dr, close to the river. The ambience is striking, as always. Service is friendly and efficient. Busy, high turnover place, but it is managed well. Now about the food. Tapas style, with Jose Andres twist on some familiar dishes, as patatas bravas, ceviche, and very fine octopus. All was quite good, octopus was real highlight. Great well curated wine list too, with variety of Old World and New World wines, mostly expensive ones. The prices are high, as expected, but not unreasonably so. Will be back, hopefully soon!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing food and service, too expensive for what it is
Disappointing dinner at Bar Mar. my friend and I went for the signature tapas menu (called differently) at $65 each. We got 5 or 6 successive small bite dishes and besides one that was absolutely divine (some revisited tuna sashimi), all others were very disappointing. We received 2 servings of cold cuts by mistake, and overall the service was disappointing as well. Overall it’s too expensive for what it is.

Friends were in Chicago for a conference and stopped in at Bar Mar to see if there were any tables open without a reservation. They lucked out, sat down and ordered. They were wow'd by the food and drinks immediately and started texting me photos (because they know I LOVE to eat!) of their food. I've been hmmm-ing and haw-ing for a year now about flying into Chicago for business, family and pleasure. Those texts sealed the deal! Two weeks later on a Monday morning, I hopped on a plane with another friend and made...or tried to make...a bee line to Bar Mar. We were supposed to hop off the plane, take a train into "town" and head to Bar Mar for a late dinner. A 3 hr. plane delay later we freaking missed our res. Fortunately, we were able to make another res for Wednesday and got to experience the fantastic menu and superb service. Here's what we stuffed our faces with: PAN DE CRISTAL CON TOMATE - Toasted slices of uniquely crispy and ethereal bread brushed with fresh tomato. This was decent but not WOW. I don't know if I'd give up stomach space to order this again. Gotta think "VALUE BITES!" CROQUETAS DE POLLO - Chicken-béchamel fritters - Oooey Gooey yum, it's like a chicken pot pie bite. PATATAS BRAVAS - Spanish fried potato, spicy brava sauce, alioli, pimentón - my friend is into gorging on potato carbs. If this wasn't our first time here and we had tasted these before, we would have ordered two from the moment we sat down, PAPAYA & SEAWEED SALAD - olive oil yogurt, seaweed, sesame dressing - the olive oil yogurt was questionable when reading but a definite YES when tasting. "SECRETO" IBÉRICO PORK STEAK - chimichurri, mojo verde - thin, tender and brilliantly seasoned. This was perfect. I will order this every time I eat here! STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING - toffee sauce, vanilla ice cream - Well done Grandma , WELL DONE!!! This is not your typical sticky toffee pudding. It's light and airy, not dense and heavy. There's just enough sweetness to be a dessert and not overly sugary. Kudos and shout out to the manager (or assistant mgr) on duty on 9/28/22, he stopped at our table and chatted food with us. He was engaging and friendly and clearly loves food as much as my friend and I do.

So good - you'll want to keep coming back to try EVERYTHING on the menu. The servers are very helpful at proportioning the meal out for you. And the space is extraordinary. The air bagel is truly one of a kind - and it kind of can be split, but don't - just get one for each person at the table. But again - every bite was amazing. And don't skip out dessert - even if you're too full!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and service.
We had fantastic food: octopus, croquets, pork, all Spanish dishes. The service is top, they were very kind and they know very well the menu. They gave us splendid recommendations. Try the desserts, those are very innovative and delicious. My only bad point is for the sangria (cava). It was extremely sweet, it doesn’t have fruits on it, and it taste like sweetened with some artificial chemic. For the price we paid, the Sangria should have been natural and fresh, not a pre-mixed liquor (at least it tasted like that) that you could buy for $3 in the bar of the corner.

Took my son for lunch while visiting Chicago. The restaurant was not very busy and we were seated by the window. The interior of Bar Mar is beautiful and you know you are somewhere special. We shared all the dishes we ordered and they were all very tasty and beautifully presented. We were determined to have the Brussels Sprouts salad (remember it fondly from the restaurant in Las Vegas) and were able to have it right when dinner service started. This has to be one of the best salads ever. The highlights for me were the Pulpo a la Gallega and the nitro caipirinha (mixed at tableside with an incredible flair). The octopus taste, texture snd presentation were wonderful. Being Brazilian, I did not know what to think of this concoction but the preparation and taste won me over. Well done! Bar Mar is definitely a place I would return to in a future trip to Chicago.

Although the atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant was great, the food and service were lacking. After being warned that the burger would take 20 minutes to cook, it was the burger that came out first and my guest had to wait another 10 minutes for his meal. The burger was undercooked - I was never asked how I wanted it prepared. Also, the $22 burger was served with a bag of potato chips. Seriously??? I won't be back.

Thank you so much for getting our dinner to us in such a hurry so we didn't miss a second of Fiddler on the Roof. The food we ordered was outstanding and the atmosphere is superb overlooking the river. The brussels sprouts salad was a taste sensation!

Bar Mar is the seafood centric first floor beneath Bazaar Meat. We enjoyed cocktails at the bar and then dined at a table just inside the open door leading out to the patio. The premises are stunning and our table afforded a view of the river bank, the nearby bridge and what appeared to be a stately elevated train in the distance. (Who could imagine a setting that made a Chicago CTA train look attractive?) There are outside tables available which I suppose afford river views, Tables, generally, are not crammed together. Our table feasted on shared plates including a shared entree. We finished with a delicious flan and a bread pudding for dessert, The interesting menu has many small plate offerings or, if you are more comfortable with normal sized entrees, at least a handful are offered, The service at all levels was both highly efficient and friendly. This will be a regular dining location for us.

Spacious, airy large bar with interesting small plates, fun liquid nitrogen drinks, nice staff with cool octopi lapel pins. Nice, relaxing atmosphere.

Bar Mar, a Spanish-inflected seafood restaurant, occupies a cavernous glass-walled ground floor space in a new office tower on N. Wacker Drive. We had dinner before attending a show at the Opera House a block south. It worked out very well. When we walked in at 5:30 pm, the place was standing-room-only with a mix of office workers enjoying happy hour and those like us having a pre-show meal. We were shown immediately to our table next to a window overlooking a small terrace with tables and umbrellas set out for warm weather dining. The waiter came by soon to take our order, suggesting each of us have one or two small dishes in addition to a larger one. We shared the four small plates we ordered: ceviche classico, a lobster roll , a warm brussels sprouts salad with fruit nuggets in it and shaved asparagus on romesco sauce. The ceviche in tigre de leche did not have much flavor compared to Mexican ones we've had elsewhere but we enjoyed everything else, especially the asparagus which was shaved lengthwise and served raw (or maybe lightly blanched); the sauce was delicious. For main course we each had pulpo a la Gallego which we also enjoyed. The sticky toffee pudding was recommended so we shared one. It came warm in a small cast iron baking pan with a caramel sauce to pour over and was tasty but achingly sweet. There were some amusing cocktails on the menu that we saw being prepared and served, smoking from dry ice and served in large flasks. I had a pisco sour, potent from Bacardi rum with whipped passionfruit swirled on top. There's an extensive list of bottled wine, plus beers and wines by the glass.
Service was smooth and friendly. We were pleased that we did not feel rushed but that we were out the door in plenty of time to get to the theater, as we had requested.
Even though it's a huge restaurant and it was packed, the noise level wasn't too loud, thanks to a system of yellow baffles affixed to the ceiling and some billowing yellow curtains that absorbed sound. The decor had an octopus theme with a huge lighted wicker one floating over the bar and the image appearing on plates, aprons and sculptures.
We had an enjoyable meal and look forward to a return visit. We may give Bazaar Meats, its sibling restaurant one floor above a try also.
Nice bar
Well designed with two ‘walls’ of windows, high ceiling, perfect lighting & music (at a volume that actually allows people to converse) - it’s a pleasant place to relax with some interesting cocktail & food choices (brussels petal/apricot salad delicious), and some good wines/Champagnes by glass (some overpriced).
