A childhood friend told me I had to check this place out while on my business trip to Phoenix. Rene, the chef-owner, is making amazing food here. This is not a regular taqueria. As one newspaper review said, it is more like a bistro. You show up at 5 pm hoping to grab a spot in the small space. If not, prepare to wait for 90+ minutes, but they will call you when your name comes up. I lucked out and got a spare seat as a solo when I was otherwise told it could be two hours (it was a Friday). My friend was madly sending me texts on things to try or ask for. I ended up having a special, ahi crudo, with a side of house made beans. The crudo was so well constructed. There was a beautiful mix of avocado, extra virgin olive oil, and some form of pepper puree, all as a bed for the beautiful raw sushi-grade ahi, which came with a crispy but delicate corn tortilla chip that was like nothing I have had elsewhere. As subtle and gentle and whimsical as the tuna was, the beans were deeply stewed and flavored with a nice pepper heat in the background. The mix of going back and forth from the fish with its nuances to the beans and their depth was awesome. I know, who would describe Mexican food that way? He made simple things sing with quality rather than fuss. I also got to try a piece of the tomahawk bone-in ribeye. It was on par with any high end steakhouse I have been to. My whiskey sour was also perfectly made and went really well with everything on the plate. I swear I grunted in happiness at least a few times. I will be back as many times as I possibly can.
