Avant Garden New York Reviews from The Last Year
It is truly amazing what avant- garden can do with
It is truly amazing what avant- garden can do with mushrooms, carrots, etc. as someone who's usually skeptical of vegan recreations, I had an awesome food experience here. The drinks were also delicious and the atmosphere is truly stunning. The reason I say 4 and not 5 stars is that they recommend that each person get 2 entrees, each of which are around $25. This is bad practice in my opinion, just make each entree bigger and charge $30 or whatever.
Great ambiance, beautiful plating, decent prices.
Hen of the woods and cauliflower were the favorites.
Stopped in on a Thursday evening at 6pm and was seated
Stopped in on a Thursday evening at 6pm and was seated right away. I didn't see any other tables occupied, yet they sat us at a high top bar table. Normally, I wouldn't have minded sitting here, however being 7 months pregnant, it was definitely not comfortable, considering every other table was available. The decor here was upscale and beautiful. Everything from the interior, the tables, chairs and bar was just so aesthetically pleasing. Our server and the bartender were both very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations. My sister and I ordered 4 dishes to share. The dishes are designed to be shared and they recommend two dishes per person. We started with the baby gem salad which was very crisp and fresh. I loved the charred lettuce, the creamy avocado, and roasted tomato. The croutons were freshly toasted and nicely buttered. Next, we had the scorched cauliflower, which was my favorite of all the dishes. The cauliflower was perfectly cooked and soft to the bite, served on top of a tasty puree made of cauliflower, toasted garlic, and fried capers. The puree was so flavorful. We also ordered the spaghetti and the risotto. The spaghetti is homemade, but I found it to be a little too al dente for my liking. The risotto was very good, topped with yellow foot mushrooms, balsamic pearls, and watercress. To end the meal, we had the chocolate lava cake which was a special for the day. It was served with a brûléed banana and porcini mushroom ice cream on top of a blueberry sauce. This was the best vegan chocolate lava cake I've ever had. We were so full by this point, we didn't get to finish it, but I wish we had saved more room for it. Highly recommend this restaurant for a delicious vegan meal. Great for a date or girls night out.
Less than expected
Very pretty space; low lit and nice atmosphere. Based on reviews we read, our expectation was to have one of the best vegan meals in NYC, which should mean the best anywhere. This expectation was not met. The brussels sprout salad was a promising start, but the vegan "paella" bore no resemblance to the real article. The pasta and lava cake were pretty good but nothing special. For us, as non-vegans, this is not a repeat.
Walked in on an early Friday evening, 6:30-ish and there
Walked in on an early Friday evening, 6:30-ish and there was still bar room to dine. Beautiful cozy ambiance, great for talking to your friends. Food is amazing (and I'm a meat eater), inventive. Cocktails are fantastic too. Between me and a friend we asked our bartender Noah to surprise us with one dish from each section. He explained the ingredients in our food and cocktails and made the whole experience more fun! It is a little expensive but 3 dishes plus dessert and drinks between my friend and I was definitely enough. Not a MCD after dinner situation.
hmmm alright but nothing to write home about.
So dim inside and could barely see the food, also not much explanation as to which dish was what. The cocktails are definitely more of the focus at this "restaurant". It is a bit hard to find and has a speakeasy feel so that part is cool but that's about it.
Avant Garden is a fantastic vegan tapas spot.
I love vegan food, but it does have to be done well in order to be reallllyyy good. This place is that good. The dishes are creative and executed well. Something that can be difficult is getting that extra flavor when you don't have dairy or meat products, but they are pros and do it soooo well. Every bite is wonderful, and I particularly loved their spin on avocado and mushroom toasts. The inside is also so cute and intimate. We sat outside because it was summer, but definitely try to get a reservation inside because it is so cozy and lovely.
AMAZING food.
My girlfriend and I came here for Valentine's Day and it was such a treat. The decor was great, the food was amazing, the staff were super friendly and helpful. I loved the vibe of it all. And of course, the food was fantastic. First time trying a full vegan menu but did not disappoint in the slightest. I'm a 300 pound Asian dude and I love meat but did not miss it at all while dining here! 100% coming again.
Great food even if you are not vegan! Located on Greenwich
Great food even if you are not vegan! Located on Greenwich Village in Manhattan. All the dishes were tasty and well made.
Not a vegan but loved it!
I am not vegan but my friend is but I thoroughly enjoyed this spot! Delicious food, great service, felt like a local spot.
Was very excited to eat here due to its extensive plant
Was very excited to eat here due to its extensive plant based menu! The space is a little cramped, but the ambience is nice! The food is tapas style. Definitely try the sunchoke toast and the baby gem salad! Creative vegetable dishes.
See what you think
Some of the dishes were excellent others were underwhelming. The service was good and it's a great space. I think everything, both food and drinks, was a bit over priced. I don't think we'll go back.
Disclaimer: Kate and I did a vegan cleanse at the beginning
Disclaimer: Kate and I did a vegan cleanse at the beginning of the year and we just kept going. I am fully aware that being a vegan involves being very irritating and annoying to everyone around you. I've been trying to lean into it. I say "I can't eat that" as often as I say "is there a bathroom in here?" It's fibrously grating on people's nerves. That being said, here it goes- my impression of an annoying vegan reviewing a killer vegan restaurant: Wow! A vegan restaurant that delivers like any other five star restaurant... And isn't using copious amounts of fake meat! God I'm better than other people! The food was out of control, the wood hen mushroom dishes worth coming back for a loan, the service was really something as both the bartender and the waitress came back over and over to make sure we had everything we need, and to explain how much they put into each dish or cocktail! Other people are monsters for eating animals or even using their milk for butter! As far as the atmosphere, it truly is like being in a garden (of Eden)(where no one even says a derogatory remark to a cow) the ambience, being near perfect, and the vegan treats at the end were excruciatingly delightful. Much UNLIKE the excruciating pain a chicken goes thru when it's being milked for its "chicken milk." BASTARDS. A must, and it doesn't hurt that the bitters bar underneath is really something spectacular too. I recommend doing a double banger! And NEVER wearing LEATHER. The original yelp gangster, T.J.
Was excited to bring a friend from out of town here but
Was excited to bring a friend from out of town here but wasn't too crazy about the food. It wasn't bad but I expected more flavor for the price. Service was good. It's really dark so cute for a date.
Good atmosphere, but I wish they had more nut free options
We went here to celebrate an event and I had heard excellent things about this place being veggie forward. However our friend traveling with us has a nut allergy they were able to make some accommodations however a significant portion of the menu had to be adjusted. I wish they had items that didn't need to be adjusted so that we'd get the full experience. Additionally, I will say we got maybe 5 plates and we varied in our thoughts. There were mild executional details that were missed. Some needed more salt. Others needed a little more texture contrast or some balance (like adding acid). Minor things. I will say it was miles above other vegan places I've been too and I would recommend this to others. If you're not a mushroom person this may not be a place for you. I do think they could do more to consider other faux proteins.
