A.R. Valentien San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
Over-priced, stuffy pretentious staff.
Hit and miss on food. It mostly over-priced.
I have not been to A.
R. Valentien in a number of years, so I decided to return this Sunday late morning at 11:00 a.m. I used to dine at the first booth with my Mother from time to time, When I arrived under the porte-cochere with the valets, they were busy attending to some departing guests. However, that soon was resolved and I was motioned over and my "chariot" was parked. The Craftsman interior lobby of the Lodge opens to a polished oval table topped by a Louis Comfort Tiffany-style hanging lamp. The bar is to the right. In the bar, is a beautiful tiled hearth topped by a decorative copper hood. Other than a few Champagnes, the entire wine list at A.R. Valentien is New World. From the list, I selected a Kistler "les Noisetiers" Chardonnay, from the Sonoma Valley. which I enjoyed. Service all around was pleasant. Nancy was kind and attentive. Mustafa from Morocco stopped by for a little chat, and Jack from the Bahia at the reception door of A.R. Valentien had a kind manner.

We had a lunch here to celebrate birthday, view from the terrace is nice and cozy, a little bit cold but no one ever checked it with us. The food is so-so, and few mussels tasted not fresh. The waiter is quite nice but did not share much information of the food. No birthday treat, no one even asked if we'd like to order desert. Frontdesk focused her work so much, totally ignored us when we left.

Breakfast is my favorite meal here and you do not need a reservation. It is rare to find true gourmet food at breakfast with a gorgeous comfortable quiet setting. Lemon ricotta pancakes star, along with a side order of ham that is glorious. A short list of specialty pastries also appeals. You can sit indoors in plush booths or in a charming dining room or on the outdoor patio surrounded by Torrey Pine trees. When you want a truly memorable high-end meal, why not do it at breakfast instead of dinner? The price is not insurmountable when you do your gourmet resort-class dining in the morning.

Our family has celebrated at AR Valentine in the Lodge for special family occasions and for work-related private parties since the 2000's. It's our go-to. Since COVID, we dine out less frequently, so it is very special to take the family out to a fine restaurant. However, we had a disappointing, mediocre dinner on Saturday, 3.9.24. Two orders of pork loin and one order of sea bass went uneaten. The sea bass was overcooked, the sauce was unappealing and the pork loin was fatty and tasteless. Very sorry to provide this negative feedback. What happened???
Exceptional cuisine, impeccable service.
Grateful for the memorable evening you crafted for my date. I enthusiastically endorse this restaurant for anyone seeking a romantic ambiance with a picturesque view to savor their meal.
Beautiful place to chill.
Food this time was not so delicious. The soup was not my favorite. Never serve that soup again. Sunchoke soup! Amazing ambiance and the service was great. Do not order that soup.
Cannot recommend this restaurant enough.
It feels cozy and tucked away. The service was amazing!! We went for our anniversary and they really treated us well. We even got a keepsake of the menu for that evening with a custom message to us! The food was fun and delicious!!! I loved the way the chef played with flavors and textures! The tempura quail dish was fantastic! Everything was delicious. We've been to quite a few nice restaurants in SD, but this is easily at the top of my list. I plan to come back many times.
Another extraordinary dinner
We live in La Jolla, and this is my wife’s favorite restaurant in town. Our dinner last month proves exactly why, as every item was extraordinary. I highly recommend the persimmon salad and whatever soup they happen to have of the day. Our group had the scallops, lamb, and roasted chicken, and all of them were extraordinary. Their bread service is fantastic, and at no cost, and they always bring a complementary vegetable side and a little something sweet for dessert. The service is world class, yet very friendly with no pretense. The room is beautifully lit and decorated, and you’re never rushed. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in town and very popular with visitors and locals alike.
A Must
This is our second year returning here. And I must say it does not disappoint. The ambiance, the banquets, the sunset views , the service and most of all the food are all superb. The architecture of the lodge itself and its surroundings are stunning. And the restaurant menu drinks and food all live up to it reputation. A must if you are traveling and in the area.
Outstanding food and setting, disappointing service.
The food and the setting are exceptional. The building was inspired by the celebrated Gamble House, in Pasadena, designed by the Greene brothers. It's marvelous. My fish (a Japanese name which, unfortunately, I don't remember) and the accompanying side dishes were outstanding. My companion's pasta was outstanding. The gateau Basque was very good. The soup--a creamy, potato-like soup--was tasteless. The service could have been better. When we made our reservation, we specified that it was our anniversary and we wanted a window seat. The staff apparently hadn't seen this information. Other restaurants take anniversaries seriously. One of our coffee cups had a crack in it: this makes a bad impression.
Great food, great staff and wonderful visit
We had an amazing experience with our visit to A.R. Valentien. Our server Willow was amazing and professional and very friendly. Answered all of our questions and was very pleasant. All of our courses were amazing. Lastly visited by Paul in the evening towards dessert time and he offered us a glass of prosecco to congratulate us on our wedding anniversary and also got an awesome dessert from the kitchen for our anniversary as well. Could not have gotten a better way to celebrate our 1st anniversary dinner.
A nice evening in June
Overall, it is a lovely restaurant and we had a nice meal. The only slight negative was as the meal went on, service waned a bit. Everyone was extremely nice, but perhaps they got busy later in the evening and it took quite a while to remove our plates and bring the check. The food however, was very good.
75th Birthday Celebration!!!
Thank you all for an amazing experience. Having such quality memories with my family is so special. The food was amazing! The service was outstanding! Thank you especially to Humberto, Miles, Julia, Andrea and Joe Every one of your staff wished me a “Happy Birthday” when they met me, I was so honored. The bread service was a surprising treat that made the food taste even better somehow!! My family was so happy with the whole night. We felt so taken care of, treated like royalty and yet comfortable and relaxed…we will be back soon!! My son is already planning his next stay to bring his wife!
Good ambiance, worst food I’ve ever had in my entire life
I’ve been here three times total, two in the last couple weeks for both lunch and dinner. I’ll start out with the positives: the restaurant has excellent vibes, a great view, excellent physical space and atmosphere, and phenomenal, friendly service from everyone I saw working there. The staff was also extremely accommodating and respectful of dietary restrictions, and it’s not too terribly expensive. On the other hand, this restaurant is responsible for some of the most foul, disgusting, plain revolting bites of food that I have ever eaten, and I question some of their management decisions. As an Italian I can be a little bit discerning and critical when it comes to pasta, but the fettuccine I was served here was clearly microwaved which I think is unacceptable; the noodles were extremely mushy, ice cold in certain parts while hot for other bites, and the dish was overall very oily and unappetizing. The real reason I’m writing a review is because of the meal I had there tonight which was some lamb and Swiss chard. I legitimately still feel ill and all I can taste in my mouth is bitter chard flavor. First of all the lamb I ordered was completely cold within one minute of arriving at the table, as was my friend’s steak—so the chefs are not even capable of heating up a piece of meat? It didn’t taste bad and was cooked okay but the temperature made it unpleasant. When I took a bite of the chard I legitimately thought I had been poisoned, it tasted so disgusting I felt as if I was going to die and no amount of water or other food eaten would get the taste out of my mouth. I’ve never once been served a good meal here. I’m going to end with one of my least favorite aspect about this restaurant: they are truly misers about their bread! Instead of operating like a normal sit down restaurant and dropping a basket of bread on the table, a condescending guy will come around and ask you if you would like one (1) piece of bread, then give you like 3 tablespoons of butter. If you fatly ask for a second piece of bread they will probably laugh at you. I hope to never have to eat here again.
An evening at A R Valentien
Food was as great as expected. Our server, Mick did a fantastic job. Paul, the sommelier was awesome and engaging. Great experience!

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
