Zen relaxing experience
Beautiful and elegant and minimalist Zen An escape that will refresh the senses Go when you can relax a bit I also found the central location a real blessing Since I was able to shop in nearby locations without too much trouble
Be the first to ReplyExceptional service and par excellence amenities
The service and communication throughout my entire engagement was par excellence, from the moment I booked to the moment I left the property. Every person with whom I interacted either via email, phone, the locker room attendant, the spa receptionist, the reservations -- all were absolutely well mannered, consistent, polite and professional. The Japanese breakfast (included) was excellent and the amenity spaces (private yoga room and pilates room, and even the gym) were a real treat, I think it is a bit abusive to charge extra to rent these spaces out they should be able to be reserved for 1 hour per day per guest included in the room. For example, the pilates room could easily accommodate 3 guests if you worked together on the machines rotating between the Cadillac and the reformer and tower. I understand you have safety protocols for Covid-19 and cleaning and for a more private experience but the gym is fully open with no capacity limits the other fitness and wellness areas should offer the same, even if it is "morning" or "afternoon" only for open use. I realise this is an exponomy creating device for the hotel, but again for the cost of the guest room it felt tacky to be charged extra to use the pilates or yoga room, especially since the spa and pool are included and open almost all day 6A - 10P is very generous and the gym is 24h. I was surprised that the room type I selected (and all rooms in this category) had the less desirable view. At one point my room was so noisy due to the train traffic below I considered "downgrading" to a standard room facing the opposite direction. I was in room 318. I was told by reservations that the entry level rooms face the park which is more quiet but when I looked at the floor plan the bathroom was smaller (that seems to be the only difference). In the future, I might consider booking this room type as it would likely be more quiet. The only room I noticed that was on the side was 314 which appears to be a suite which is unnecessary for solo travel. I realise you cannot re-organise the rooms distribution in a hotel but it might be better noted on the site as one would expect the higher level room to have either a better view or be more quiet. In terms of in-room amenities the bathroom was very nice and the desk/wardrobe area. I was disappointed with the lack of tea, beverage, and snack selection in the room. For example, there was only cow milk, not a soy or almond non dairy alternative for tea. There was no honey. And the tea kettle I had to plug into the bathroom outlet (unless I missed one near the TV console). I feel like a teapot would be better than individual cups. I also think there should have been more snacks and food to consume in the room. These could be charged to the room. It is more for convenience and more immediate than to have to call room service for a snack. Even a piece of fruit like an apple would be nice to have or a handful of nuts.

It is important to give context for this review. We have stayed at several Aman properties before and never had cause for complaint. Quite the opposite actually. The Aman Tokyo is very expensive and so the benchmark is a perfect experience. Surprisingly, it failed badly on quality of service and management of the total experience. First the good. The architecture and layout are beautifully done. The quality of the food and restaurants is top notch. In particular we loved Musashi that was world class. The room was beautiful, comfortable and well designed. No complaints there at all. Now the bad. My wife emailed the concierge several weeks before we arrived to organise some activities for our stay. The concierge responded with transport confirmations but then when silent after we requested details on activities. My wife chased them a week later and they offered us a number of activities. My wife proceeded to book the activities but nobody replied for a week. Then my wife had to chase them again but was subsequently told a number of the activities were now not available. Was that due to the slow response time ? Who knows, but either way I would expect better and there was not even an apology forthcoming . At that point there were now very limited options for the restaurant in the hotel and the spa. My wife then wrote to express her disappointment and wanted to speak to a manager. We still have not heard back from any managers. My wife asked when they recommend we leave the hotel for our flight and they suggested 3.30 pm in the afternoon. My wife assumed that that meant we would have a late checkout to that time. An assumption she says she should have checked and I agree with her BUT, a hotel of this standard should anticipate this issue and either offer us a late checkout or work on some sort of arrangement for us. We had to negotiate a late checkout to 1.30, which they gave very reluctantly after much back and forth. We were left with two hours to kill so we decided to book a table in the lounge but when my wife went to book in the morning nobody could confirm they would make space available to us. It seemed like nobody had the ability to make that decision. We did however receive a confirmation after checking back later. Finally, we wanted to buy a yukata (robe) that I wore in the room and called down to the front desk. They suggested we call the spa to check. At every other Aman we have been to they would simply have taken care of the request directly. In reviewing my own review of this hotel I wanted to make sure I am not being petty. We are privileged to stay in many amazing properties across the world. This is still a beautiful hotel but it is one of the most expensive ones we have ever stayed at and everything has a ridiculously premium price on it (especially the toast !!!!!). I expected to pay premium here but then the quality of the product must match the price and it definitely did not. We receive far better thoughtful service at all the other Aman resorts we have been at and I would say most of the Four Seasons we have been to offer superior service at a significantly lower price. I would drink in the bar here and eat in the restaurant and enjoy the wonderful view but I would not stay here again.
Be the first to ReplyThe finest hotel in Tokyo without a doubt
My job as CEO of Remote Lands is to be a hotel snob, and I can say unequivocally that Aman Tokyo is the finest hotel in town. There are many other great hotels, and I have stayed in most or all of them, but Aman Tokyo is the foremost. The location near the Imperial Palace gardens is ideal, and the views out over the gardens are incredible on a clear day. The rooms are MASSIVE and the service is flawless.
Be the first to ReplyNot the Best Aman
Having been to several Amans, I was actually only going to give them 3 stars, but I decided to add another star after speaking with the manager. As a city Aman, I don’t expect the same level of peace and exclusivity as the destination ones, but what I expected was the same level of service, perfection and cleanliness, which they did not deliver. The hallways were quite dirty, especially for Japanese standards. The pool tiles also weren’t clean enough and they didn’t constantly make-up our room every time we left. We also got asked our room number multiple times. Lastly, the housekeeping is very inconsistent. From the moment we arrived and even after having spoken to the manager, the amenities were never complete, something like a robe, shower cap, etc. was always missing. The other issues I had, I don’t think can be rectified. For example, the remote had no English at all. I think that’s basic for an international hotel. The bedroom ceiling was also very distracting, the Toto toilet was a bit slow, elevators had lines and were very slow, the bedside light switches were too bright, etc. Since we came from another hotel in Tokyo, I honestly can’t say it’s the best, but I do prefer the Aman minimalism and I enjoyed lounging in the room as it was very very inviting. They also do go above and beyond to accommodate all your requests. Despite all the people around, breakfast still felt very peaceful. Overall, we had a good stay, and I do prefer the Aman discretion for all other hotels, but in Tokyo, and without the special Aman touch like little gifts and thoughtfulness, maybe it’s not worth the extra cost of staying at an Aman.

A very special experience. We were gifted 2 nights at the Aman Tokyo. It was utterly faultless. The staff were impeccable in both dress and manner. A credit to the Aman group. The room was amazing. Likely the best I have had the pleasure to stay in. Well thought out. Beautiful aesthetic. Stellar views. Really comfortable. Bathroom was amazing allowing for the traditional Japanese bathing experience and 2 types of shower. Seriously loved the bathroom products ( I wish they had the traditional take home sizes, the products were full size and had to be purchased if you wanted to take them). We had breakfast included- generous and delicious. We had dining credit gifted tk us so were able to enjoy dinner and drinks at the bar. Delicious. Just amazing.
Be the first to ReplyNice but not worth the price
Had a beautiful room on the 38th floor with great views. The staff was excellent. The food was disappointing. They may wish to consider replacing the windows as the noise level outside (mostly sirens from emergency vehicles - late at night and early in the morning) was not pleasant.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, Poor Service and Horrible
Excite to stay this exquisite hotel but, 1) credit card was denied due to poor connection of their terminal 2) as result was asked to pay 150,000 yen right away for simple twin bed room 3) black Long Hair on room floor 4) two name tags as a gift but names are misspelled At check out the credit card was worked because I asked them to do it again but no apology. Overall the price and quality do not match. Think twice if you consider to stay this hotel.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place in Tokyo
Top of the class service, quality and experience. I couldn’t recommend this hotel more highly. They treat with the upmost respect and courtesy. I would highly recommend this to anyone traveling to Tokyo. The food is very delicious and wide variety
Be the first to ReplyGreat hotel in a city that wasn't crying for an Aman
Aman Tokyo is a wonderful hotel - quite possibly the best luxury property in a city that's teeming with top-notch options. And therein lies the "problem," if you will. There are TWO Four Seasons (Marunouchi and the brand new Otemachi, just a few blocks away from Aman), a Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, Ritz-Carlton, Park Hyatt, Suiran, Palace Hotel, Shangri-La, Andaz... not to mention upper middle class hotels like Grand Hyatt, Okura, Imperial, New Otani and Intercontinental. And, Tokyo is an extremely safe city and it's pretty easy to get around. So... what was the purpose of an Aman in Tokyo? We stayed in a Corner Suite room, which offers a full 121 square meters of living space, a combo living room/dining room, and a separate bedroom with its own sitting area. The Suite also had a master bathroom with twin sinks, and a huge bathing area with a massive bath and separate shower. There is also a "secluded" work area (the alcove can slide shut if you want privacy) with another toilet area just adjacent to it. And, since it was a corner suite, we had sweeping views of Tokyo... unfortunately, our view was of the North and Northeast, rather than the West side that has great views of the Imperial Palace and Gardens, the Shinjuku skyline, and (on a clear day) Mt. Fuji. Maybe next time. Needless to say, the room was comfortable and tastefully furnished, with muted earthly tones (i.e. not too garish) that exuded an air of warmth and comfort. As others have mentioned, the lobby is a beautiful place. Super high ceilings, and floor to ceiling glass with incredible views of the city gives a wow factor that few city hotels can match. Aman Tokyo also has a rather large pool (at least one that's indoors within a high rise) and an elaborate spa facility. Basically, this property has everything that's expected of a small luxury property with amenities that are comparable to hotels with much larger room counts. We had dinner at Arva, the property's Italian restaurant. Good but not great. Not surprising, given that Aman is not renowned for the quality of its food & beverage offerings (a week spot for the brand.) We also had Japanese breakfast delivered to our room. This was much better, although not any more impressive than what's served at competing luxury properties in the city. As a luxury hotel in Tokyo, there's not much to find fault with Aman. It's just that Tokyo was not crying for yet more luxury choices; the Aman magic lies (or used to lie) in its ability to either be far superior to any other option (not the case here), exists in an underserved luxury locale (Kyoto was definitely the case before Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Park Hyatt came along), or provides a unique experience in a remote location (Amangiri, Aman-i-khas, Amanjiwo, Amankora.) In other words, if Aman is to invest in new properties, I would rather have them amaze us in a place that would be transformed by its presence.. think Pantanal, Uyuni Salt Flats, Samarkand/Khiva/Bukhara, Cappadocia, Petra/Wadi Rum, Quito. And even in Japan, the Fuji Five Lakes area, Hiroshima, Okinawa, Kanazawa and the Kumano region are awesome places for Aman to be. In any case... as a luxury hotel in Tokyo, Aman is a great option. And I'm sure the upcoming New York and Miami properties will be similarly top-notch. I just wish they'd focus on wowing us with "true" Amans in areas that could benefit from one.
