Service was great, but the food had my partner and I pretty disappointed. It was our 1st anniversary and we had head great things from friends + Michelin Guide, so thought this spot would be worth the trip. Oysters (4/5): very fresh and go down extremely smoothly with the sauces provided Crab Beignet (3/5): Fancier term for a crab cake. Felt pretty average for a crab cake, though fresh! Cocktail (4/5): Good cocktail overall! Very rich and deep. I believe this is the Director's Cocktail? It's decorated with a pineapple Pesto Pasta w/ mushrooms (2/5): was pretty disappointed in this dish as the noodles were overcooked. The mushrooms were good though. Steak (3/5): nothing too special about the steak. Was juicy, but didn't melt in mouth and quite chewy. This was a cute and classy Californian spot, but the food didn't live up to what we were fully hoping for unfortunately.
Be the first to ReplyThey don't offer inexpensive options anymore.
Go somewhere else. Waste of money and time.

It is absolutely one of the best meals my wife and I have had. The meal was cooked to perfection. The waitress was pleasant and very helpful in the selection process. I was so taken back at the quality I personally thanked the chef. Highly recommend going.
Be the first to Replysuper expensive, slow service, and not worth it.
See the menu before going to this establishment. Dont take kids, and be prepared to be hungry after eating there. they have steaks for $165 plus. I'm not sure why this place is still in business. I should have left as soon as I sat down.

It very unfortunate how a potentially successfully establishment is completely left in unprofessional hands. I've been here at least 5 times since opened, and even if the service was never the highlight, the overall experience of the only "hi-end" option in Santa Cruz, and the quality of the food made me always came back. After Thursday, I'm not sure anymore. Long short story: closing time is at 9pm (like most spots in Santa Cruz, unfortunately). I walked in at 8:30, seated at the bar with a friend... ignored for about 10 min by the staff (not really busy, there was still a couple at the bar and two table seated). After 15 min, one of the girl came and said (politely) "I'm sorry we are closed, but I can whip up a quick drink if you want". Now, I understand the client that show up 30 min before closing is not the most welcome, but basally wait to interact until refuse the service (reasonable when it's only 15 min before closing) it's just wrong.
Be the first to ReplyThis is our second time here.
The first time was in 2019, right when Alderwood opened. Now, in 2024, they still do not disappoint t. The food was magnificent and delicious. We sate at the chef's counter, we were able to observe all of the unique servings and platters that they offer. Being out of town, coming here is always a special treat. We will be sure to return soon!
Be the first to ReplyService: .
.... this is the true reason why I'm finally writing a review after so many years and visits. The service is and always has been AWFUL. It's actually disturbing. Every staff member almost hates the customers, or their job and it's a side effect from their disgust with having to be at work. You will be left waiting over 20 min for a drink order then another 20 for the drink - no matter a glass of wine or cocktail. Further, they don't know their menu because the turn over is so high or because they truly don't care to learn. Beyond that there's an air of hostility, so bizarre. And this is throughout the staffing! Food: average, the menu is constantly restricted -- don't be fooled by the photos you see in the reviews (are these planted by the owners?) I have never seen these items on the menu and I've been to Alderwood around 20+ times over the years. The price is elevated for the subpar food - I can live with that, as that's an individuals choice. Ambiance: I have waited and considered asking for them to just PLAY MUSIC faint light whatever genre so I don't hear constant shouting and ruckus. Also, you'd think they'd have white table cloths down for elegance, but no. Everyone I know is so tired of this, so finally my family friends and I have decided we're done with Alderwood. Go if you'd like, this is just a raw true experiences.
Be the first to ReplyMy food was extremely salty.
The drink was pure sugar and ice. After I left the place, I went to eat again somewhere else to take the disappointment from my mouth. I was still hungry. Is a no for me. I wanted to like it but it is a restaurant for people who doesn't care to overpay for average food and pay for ambient and status. 3 stars because employees and ambient were nice and food was average.

Amazing service and those mushrooms are absolutely insane! Lobster role? It was a delicacy. The Caesar salad and the apple and chicory salad were incredible! The large fries with garlic aioli may have made me see god. The server suggested a lovely wine and the duck was very tasty. The steaks were pretty good as well although I was not as impressed with the steaks as with the sides and appetizers. I will come back just for those.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time at Alderwood after many years of driving by.
Came in for two burgers, $16 each +2 dollars for avocado and got these fancy fried potato things. The experience was great, the entire bar was open, but we got seated rather close to the door, which was OK but it was slightly cold. Staff didn't seem like they wanted to chat, which is fine, but sometimes it's fun to chat, especially at the bar, and we're going to tip you 20% no matter what, so at least put some effort in, especially if it's not busy. The personality of staff alone knocks a star off what would've been a five star review.
Be the first to ReplyMy food never arrived.
Our party of four had an early dinner there before a Santa Cruz Warriors game at 7. We arrived at 5:30 and had our order in by 5:40. Our food started arriving around 5:50 but my dinner wasn't included. Around 6 I asked the server when my dinner (pasta) was coming. She said it was on its way. A few minutes later we asked a bus person and she said it was coming. We asked again around 6:20 and the server said it was just about done. Finally at 6:30 we asked for the check. The server told me my food was ready and did I want to eat it there or did I want to take it with us. I said I didn't want it and we paid the check and left for the game. The experience was disappointing because at no point did anyone come and apologize or offer to give me something else or anything other than it was almost here. We were quite polite the entire time. To be fair the place had only been open a week and they may have been over their head. On the other hand it occurred to me later the I had paid for the meal that I never received. I was a regular at the old place but I won't be back for a while.

When we called, a hostess forgot to tell us that the restaurant location was different from the one on Yelp. There was an empty restaurant on the Yelp address. When we called again, she gave us an incorrect direction and the restaurant itself didn't show its name outside. It seemed like it's a temporary location. When our drinks came, the hostess overpoured and spilled it but didn't offer a replacement. After an hour we had to wave down one of servers to place our order.Food came out cold. Pasta sauce and pasta were already dried!! and cold and melted cheese was hardened as if they had been siting out. Mushroom was burnt. For the first time, I didn't tip at a restaurant, even when our waitress was looking down on me with a credit card terminal.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a GEM.
The cocktails, the service, the quality of the ingredients and the care for the food they put out is top notch, and is incredibly obvious with every bite you eat and drink you take. Our server Rafael was kind, professional, passionate and a master craftsman of drink making. We had the most beautiful oysters, and a ridiculously fancy fish sandwich. It was crispy and fabulous. Did I mention the sourdough tempura onion rings? GOD TIER. This place is Michelin quality. If you have not yet been, go. No seriously, run. NOW. :)

Ok so you're looking for a goody place where you won't need to spend exorbitant amount of money and you'll get absolutely stunning high quality foods?! Alderwoods the place for you! Yes it's pricier than other restaurants in town but the food is just beyond! the flavors they come up with and the texture mixing is so impressive and honestly just super fun to eat! Made a reservation weeks ago for a chefs table tasting with waygu add on. Prepaid $180 to hold the spot. My wife and I have been excited to visit for weeks. Get an email confirming my reservation... Get a text doing the same... I press 1 to confirm we'll see you tomorrow. Here we go. The day is upon us, Valentines dinner celebration. Show up hungry ready for some delicious food... Alderwood is closed for the winter?! How does a Michelin rated restaurant close without canceling prepaid reservations?!Unacceptable, unprofessional, and just straight up uncool. Before you come back make sure they are actually open. In fact you can go book an Open Table reservation right now for tomorrow, but they won't be there when you show up
Be the first to ReplyHad the best tomatoe salad of a lifetime.
Chef is so talented. Great service and beautiful cozy setting.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food.
Love the staff. Sit at the chef bar and watch all the action happen. Love this place
Be the first to ReplyMerci Alderwood the food was amazing.
Crisp clean beautiful oysters. Mysterious smokey stories through the forest and garden with their hen of the woods and the potatoe wedges are to die for. I recommend this place 10000 times over.

What a treat to come in tonight for our anniversary!! We have been stalking this place for a year or so, waiting for the opportunity to try it out. Well, we finally booked it and got so much more than expected. They adjusted our reservation with no problem (the rain had us a delayed a bit). They greeted us and sat us right at the best table in the place...views of the kitchen, a wee bit secluded, and assigned to the best dude ever, Alex. The food was amazing. Since we were splurging anyway, we went for the white truffle carbonara, the gorgeous pop overs with various spreads (pomegranate jam...holy balls that was good), fresh oysters with the best mignonette in the perfect dropper bottle (omg thank you for not making me use a spoon), the signature mushroom dish that is not to be missed, a burger that made my husband laugh...then cry...and a Japanese A5 that was nothing short of riveting. The best part of the experience was watching the firm yet nurturing hand with which Chef managed the kitchen. He took time to train the younger folks, and kept steady control of the finished plates. Good humans work here all around, and that is something we will 100% keep supporting. Thank you Chef, Alex, and the whole team. XoxoJulia and Nick
Be the first to ReplyI think this is the best restaurant in Santa Cruz.
If you like oysters this is the best place to go. Other good is high quality and prepared with great care. Service and ambiance can't be beat.
Be the first to ReplyFood was good.
Drinks were okay. Service was very slow. We came in for Sunday lunch and it wasn't that busy. Our server didn't check in on us often and we were waiting for a long time after finishing our entrees to order dessert. I noticed some people came in and waited a long while to be helped but ended up leaving. I don't think our experience was worth it to be coming back again.

Good food, good waiters, but all tinted by an incredibly rude hostess. We spent the weekend in Santa Cruz celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary. Naturally we wanted to see the best the city had to offer. There were several tables outside, including 2 in a big booth and with a bit of sunshine, but the hostess asked us to sit in the one the small one that was right on the walkway. We asked to sit under the sun to what she replied almost in an admonishing way that if we sit there we had to be out by 3:15 because of a reservation. That was more than 2 hours away at that moment! After that she didn't even offer us water. Enter another walked-in older white couple, who got to sit right the way in the other nice table next to us and got asked right the way by this person if they wanted water. After that we kept receiving angry looks from the hostess. I can only guess that it was our young age, and the fact that we are POC that made the difference in the way we vs the white old couple was treated. Funny thing is we ended up ordering the most expensive items in the menu while said couple ordered sandwiches. We left before 3:15 and after getting ice cream in the same street walked by the restaurant a couple of times to see our table empty until at least 4pm. Overall, very disappointed by a treatment I have never gotten in a restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food.
Definitely on the pricey side but if you want quality they've got it. Hen of the woods dish is spectacular. Burgers are actually well priced/good deal for what you get.
Be the first to ReplyI found this place while visiting Santa Cruz.
The drinks, food, and service was really good! The place was nice and clean and our server was super attentive. I usually don't finish my food but I definitely finished my cheeseburger. You can definitely taste how fresh the food is.
