3.5 Unfortunately, ALDEA is closing tonight and perhaps that comes across in the dining experience my friend and I had this past weekend. I've walked by the restaurant a million times in the 10 years that it was open in the Union Square-area and only decided to eat there in its final days. Maybe in its hey day it was a Michelin Star kind of place, but not anymore. I was uninspired by the food and the service. We had the four course prix fixed menu, which by the way, online indicates it's $89. Imagine my surprise when I sat down and saw it was $94. I'm not one to quibble over $5 but this left a bad taste in my mouth. I will mention that the hostess and the bartender were delightful when I arrived early for the reservation. The hostess immediately offered to check any items I had and asked if I want to sit at the table before my friend arrived. Huzzah for not making you wait until your whole party is there. I decided to sit at the bar and have a glass of vinho verde [$15]. What I particularly enjoyed was the bowl of complimentary popcorn you get while you sit there. Oh, and the barstools are velvety soft and padded. My butt was happy. When we were shown to our table, the hostess had someone bring my half full glass of vinho verde to me. Okay, she was really impressive. This [and the pasteis de nata] accounts for my rounded up rating. Then things kind of just flattened out.Every time a dish came out to our table, the server always ย gave me my friend's order and visa versa. Strange. We also received the amouse bouches at the same time as our first course. Strange again. One amouse bouche was a potato soup, which was quite tasty. The other was a sort of gel thing that was semi hard and didn't work as a palette cleanser. I ordered the jamon serrano which was great because how can jamon not be great? It was presented on a cutting board alone. There were no accompaniments, no bread, no jam, nothing. Okay... The only bread at our table was the complimentary one served with soft butter and olive oil. It was good. ย Next up was the shrimp alhinho which came with two clams and a trace of a mussel. It smelled a little too fishy for my liking. It was actually a forgettable dish and that's bad considering it's one of their signature. The arroz de pato was more interesting. The duck was cooked nicely and I enjoyed the texture contrast of the cracklings with the softness of the rice. The bits of sliced olive were a nice touch of saltiness. The dots of orange on the side served as a good hint of acid. Now dessert: The pre-dessert was totally forgettable [sense a theme here] and came out at the same time as our dessert. Strange. I don't even remember what it was. Anyway, we both order the pasteis de nata because I'm still trying relive my time spent traveling in Portugal. The pasteis de nata [two to a serving] were larger than normal and were glorious. It brought me right back to the sunny streets of Lisbon, eating these beauties on the sidewalk. My friend was quite ecstatic too- he's never had a pasteis de nata before. I also had a tawny port because for some reason they didn't serve ruby port. Strange. The waiter handed us our check before we even had the chance to ask. I was still finishing my port. We spent over $300 for a subpar [and strange] experience. I'm disappointed, especially if this was to represent Portuguese cooking and hospitality.

They're closing, don't even bother coming here because everyone's checked out and it shows. It's absolutely gut wrenching to see a restaurant trying to keep up nearly its closing. Though I wish they would maintain their quality and not tarnish the George Mendes brand, the opposite rang true.Came here for the night after Valentines Day. I've been here in the past and always found their food remarkable with excellent service. But this time we were sorely disappointed. From the very average food, overpriced pre-fixe Valentine's Day Menu($130), zero ambiance to the non-existent service for a tasting menu left us with a lot to be desired. Not one server ever came by to check in on us to see if we had problems with our meal, not even a single "how's everything" or explanation on what was being served. Everyone just rushed by to drop their plate down and pick the plate up without a word or a smile. We walked out paying over $300 for a meal that felt like a rushed 3-course mediocre restaurant meal. Definitely not the one star Michelin experience I've had in the last. I expected more from you for my last meal here, Aldea.
Be the first to ReplyI feel like I set my expectations too high for this place.
Just to get disappointed. The food looked so good when I was looking thru the pics. When I got here the ambiance is alright. Some tables had candles lit while others did not. And I sat at a table that did not have a candle and I kept wishing we had a candle because the lighting was a tad bit too dim. We ordered 4 appetizers and 2 entrees. The appetizrs were so small, I was in shock. The mussels and shrimp was the most disappointing of it all. Literally 3 pieces of shrimp and three of the smallest mussels I've seen in my entire life. I swear. In most of the pictures the Uni looked super fresh but the one we received there was some fresh pieces but mainly dark pieces that u can tell are not longer fresh. It was so disappointing. The truffles and scallop, the truffles really lacked any type of truffle flavor. Another major disappointment. The foigras dish was okay. The charred vegetables ruined it for me. It was dumb bitter and over salted. We then received our entrees. We ordered cod and duck conf. The actual duck skin tasted horrible. Like some awful aftertaste going on. I had to wash it down w some water ASAP. and the olives ruined the rice. Felt like it was just threw into the dish without any thought. It almost made the whole rice dish taste a bit like trash. The fish was okay, ย nothing amazing. nice sear ontop. And not fully cooked which is fine. but if it was cooked a tad bit more, the texture would've been a lot better. There was too much chew to my liking to the cod. the tomato rice I was hoping would elevate the flavors of the fish. But it didn't. It felt like two separate dishes that didn't belong together. Overall the plates were small/overpriced and unsatisfying. The only good thing was the staff was super friendly and attentive. and they have a beautiful open kitchen. ย I left super hangry.

3.5/5, rounded up. Overall, solid meal but not a must-visit in NYC.I took my mother here during one of her recent visits, along with my husband, as a lowkey yet fancy treat. The $89 4-course prix fixe is one of the more affordable Michelin-starred options in the city. We had a great seat facing the open kitchen, and it was fairly easy to get a reservation for an early dinner on Friday. We started out with a pair of amuse bouche. For the first course, I got the foie gras while the others got sea urchin toast. Foie gras is always a win, especially paired with buttery toasted brioche, but I would pass on the sea urchin toast. I'm a huge fan of uni, but the taste of the sea urchin at Aldea was nothing special. For our second course, we all got the octopus, which had a flavorful sauce, but I've definitely had better charred octopus elsewhere, texture-wise. As for the mains, we got the scallops, lobster, and salted cod, so we could all try a bit of each. They were all pretty good, although the scallop was the standout. The portions for dessert were actually the most generous of the courses. The egg tarts tasted fine (definitely had better in Portugal) and the chocolate mousse was a bit too sweet. If you have a big appetite, definitely get the Sonhos (or Portuguese beignets) which came with several fluffy donuts and dipping sauces.Overall, nothing was that memorable so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to a friend. However, if you are just really, really craving Portuguese food and value isn't really a concern, Aldea does hit the spot.

** Great dining experience for wedding anniversary **Two of us ordered 4 course menu with wine. We sat on the bar where we can see Chef George Mendes orchestrated his team cooking those amazing dishes. Servers are attentive and nice. Appetizers:Sea urchin toastHamBoth highly recommendSecond course:We both get Foie Gras.My husband and I are Foie Gras lovers and this is one of the best taste we ever had.Entrees:FishDuckI find the portion is a little too big. Definitely tasty but not as interesting as the first two courses.Dessert:Rice pudding with smoked Cinnamon ice creamEgg tartsI highly recommend egg tarts. Just the entrees are too big that I couldn't finish two egg tarts at the end.I highly recommend this place for date, celebration or just a casual fancy meals.

I guess since this restaurant has a Michelin star so our expectations were high. I think the food was good but nothing special. Not particularly tasty ย - nothing really memorable.
Be the first to ReplyWe headed to Aldea on Friday night for a 6:30pm reservation.
We both decided to go with the Four-Course Menu priced at $89 each. To start, we were brought potato soup and jelly. Both were unique and a fun way to begin the meal. To drink we had: Cava - Pares Balta, Brut. Rosa dos Ventos - Bootlegger Vodka, Ginja, Fresh Lemon, Eggwhites, Rose Flower Water. To eat we had: Hokkaido Sea Urchin Toast - cauliflower purรฉe, mustard seed and shiso. I had mine without the bread, as they did not have a gluten free bread alternative. Charcoaled Octopus - stew of cod tripe, beans and eggplantCorn Custard - house cured bacalhau, crisped corn, tamarindMaine Diver Sea Scallops - koji-cured badger flame beets, raw beet petals, grilled wild Maine maitake mushrooms Arroz De Pato - duck confit, chouriรงo, black olive, orange and duck cracklins For dessert we had: Hazelnut Chocolate Mousse - salted sabayon, caramelized fall fruit, banana ice creamIce Creams and Sorbets - Daily selection

I thought the attendance was arrogant at first but soon realized she didn't speak English that well. Food qulity was not so impressive as it should. Some dishes were out of stock which was very disappointing. If you are looking for a fancy environment it is pretty good. If you are aiming at nice enviroment AND delicious food, definitely avoid.

Disaster! Whole pint of beer spilled over pregnant wife at the beginning of the meal while server was bringing to the table. Soaked in beer for the entire night.Sat down at 7:30pm, left after 11pm, for four courses. Almost an hour between each course. To be fair, several items were discounted off the bill because of the above, which was nice. (removed portion of review about an earlier billing issue, which was resolved)Food was OK but notable decline in quality since our last visit (the three stars is for the food, would otherwise be lower). No doubt because the kitchen was rushing things out. Clearly too many tables on this night for the kitchen and servers to handle. (11-Oct-2019)Not the best Michelin star experience.
Be the first to ReplyI had high expectations for this place.
Unfortunately the flavors were not on point on this particular night. Maybe because it was a Tuesday. Anyways the three of us did the 4 course menu. The starters we had were the iberico ham, sea urchin toast and sardine toast. They were just ok nothing stood out. For mains we had the strip steak, scallops, and arroz con pato. Steak and scallops were good but not mind blowing. The arroz con pato was the major disappointment. The rice had an overwhelming olive flavor could not taste anything else even the duck. In addition as you can see from the photo there were 5 measly strips of duck where is the rest of the duck? Unfortunately the dessert was the best part of the meal. If that was what I had wanted I would've gone to a dessert bar. I am surprised this place has a Michelin star. Not worth the pilgrimage. Overpriced for the experience.
