Superb Local Cuisine.
Amazing local cuisine. Everything flavorful with nice presentation. . You need to have someone who speaks Japanese call to make the reservation. Chef and hostess speak no English. They do have cards that tell you what fish you are eating. Otherwise just enjoy what is put in front of you. We went on a Saturday night and were surprised that we were the only 2 at the restaurant. Made an extra special last night in Japan. Restaurant can be hard to find. When walking up hill from the main Street it is on the left side across from a small alley Worth the visit and have recommended restaurant to many friends.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic kaiseki restaurant for a unique private dining experience
We absolutely loved our meal at Aji Fukushima and thought it was some of the best food weโve ever had. Our hotel helped us book a reservation here and to our surprise and delight we had one of the rooms entirely to ourselves! The chef came and prepared a few courses in front of us and the rest were brought in from the adjoining kitchen by the very attentive staff. Everything came out very quickly between courses so our dinner was shorter than others we had while visiting, which was great for having plenty of time to walk around Gion after eating. Overall fantastic food and ambiance, absolutely worth the price and visit!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Kaiseki restaurant
Came here for the affordable kaiseki lunch course (roughly 4000y). There is no menu, itโs one course for everyone, and frankly nothing is given on what to expect. Thatโs okay, simply sit and enjoy the next surprise. Our course meal was a mix of warm soups, sashimi slices, donburi, fried tofu, all finishing in a lovely bento box. It was surprisingly filling for a high end meal, and had a nice balance between flavor profiles. The fried tofu and braised daikon in particular were outstanding. Despite the intimate, exclusive atmosphere, the chefs were approachable, and entire staff very friendly. This really complemented the whole experience.
Overall, for a taste of high end Kyoto cuisine, and a penultimate fine dining experience, this hit the spot.
Terrific seafood kaiseki
Wife and I went here for lunch and loved it. The whole place is just seven seats at a counter. Every dish was fantastic. For the quality of food, lunch was an outstanding deal. Strongly recommend.
Two things to note for tourists:
-It's hard to find if you can't read Japanese. The door just looks like the door to someone's house with very minimal labeling. You'll probably walk past it once or twice before you are sure which door is the right one.
-Basically no English is spoken at all. This doesn't matter much because it's a set meal (i.e., you don't order). The only slight issue was ordering drinks, as they don't have an English menu, so we just asked for the one type of tea we knew how to say in Japanese. There were a few types of food we were hoping to avoid (e.g., sea cucumber), so we communicated that through our concierge. Fortunately, the head chef was extremely friendly which helped make us feel more comfortable despite not being able to really communicate.
Colourful yet palatable dishes
I was wandering at Hanamikoji-Dori for lunch. I looked at all the displayed menu before I made my decision. I walked past a lot of shops and restaurant before I found this restaurant and I just entered.
Without a second thought, I ordered the seasonal set lunch which cost me only 1,800yen. The set came with a plate with colourful dishes, which consist of tempura, tamagoyaki, seasonal food like chestnut, yam and pumpkin, Kyoto delights such as chirimen fish and dried yuba as well as a steam rice with carrot and ginkgo nuts.
I love autumn season food in Japan and this set lunch was so satisfactory.
