Aizle Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year
Fantastic lunchtime tasting menu with paired wines
Absolutely brilliant tasting menu with paired wines -fantastic value! Great relaxed environment. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Best Restaurant in Edinburgh
Every time I travel to Edinburgh, I visit Aizle. It's the best restaurant in Edinburgh. The service, staff, and allergy accommodations are outstanding. The food is just beyond amazing. The experience is unique, and the flavor combinations are unforgettable. I look forward to visiting your restaurant again soon. Thank you for the best experience ever.
An experience of two halves.
Booked this restaurant before we left home as the reviews relating to the culinary skills of he chef sounded exciting. The Tasting Menu did not disappoint as each dish left you feeling the Chef had a skill set above the norm. The dishes flowed from start to finish and were executed extremely well. It wasn't just about presentation as the depth of flavour was something else. The overall rating has nothing to do with the above so what lets it own? Service and atmosphere I am afraid. We had a 7.30pm booking and arrived at 7.10 to have a drink first. There seemed to be an urgent need to show us to our table despite there being no one else in the restaurant and it was this sense of urgency that continued throughout the evening and frankly impacted upon the above rating. There were 2 members of waiting staff and in my opinion one knew exactly how to manage themselves and did a wonderful job throughout and the other needs to calm down and be less pushy with their service. A Tasting Menu is not a five minute experience and can take a few hours to truly appreciate each served dish. Being observant and anticipating diners needs is one thing but quite different when they are made to feel rushed so staff can complete their shift and go home. I would mention there were 3 tables dining throughout the evening making a total of 6 diners so hardly a busy night. This point links into my second area of disappointment which was the atmosphere or the total lack of it. We went for a similar dining experience previously in the week at another restaurant and it was full so there are people out there wanting this style of dining. I am not sure if this is a regular Thursday night for Aizle but if this restaurant relies entirely on full sittings on Friday and Saturday evenings only it is unlikely to stand the test of time. In my opinion that would be a great shame as the food is delicious so it may help those in charge to go through this review to see how they can address the points I have made. It is an expensive evening and diners have an expectation that all areas of service should be on point and good food alone will not guarantee longevity.
Worth a visit
One of the best food experiences on my trip. The tasting menu is very well-planned and highlights the ingredients. My top two would be lamb belly and the fish dish. Amazing texture and flavor combination. Worth a visit if you're ever in Edinburgh.
Why does Aisle not (yet) have a Michelin Star?
My wife and I went to Aisle for an evening meal on Valentine’s Day. We were reminded how good the food is – just pitch-perfect. Innovative, interestingly presented and amazingly tasty. The staff are well-informed, friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is relaxed. It is undoubtedly competitive with the other Michelin-starred in Edinburgh, and we can only assume that the ‘garden-room’ setting has held it back. I imagine that could be improved with a bit of thought and the décor changed a little (for instance, our table for two was quite small). Anyway, this restaurant is outstanding, central and not to be missed!
Laid back vibe with quality food and friendly service
Hidden within the Kimpton hotel in a central garden room Aizle has a laid back european vibe. It only offers a set tasting menu so be bold and go with it, we tried dishes that we would not normally order and were very pleasantly surprised. And eight courses is a lot, even if each course was quite small, we struggled to finish everything. Service was friendly and informative but suggest you give yourselves time, it took four hours.
Wow
We had a fantastic meal and experience. Have been lucky enough to eat at a few nice restaurants with tasting menu and matching wines in the last year and Aizle was easily the best. Menu, which is kept a bit secret, was brilliant and perfectly paced and matching wines were all superb. Really excellent meal.
Great!
Keen to try Aizle and lucky enough to get a table on Sunday PM. Had to change reservation time at short notice and was easily done. Loveley evening and lived all the courses. Did not have the wine flight but enjoyed the Old fashioned. Favourite course was the Lamb and the layer duck. Lively decor throughout.
High level gastronomy!
If the idea of an exceptional dining experience in Edinburgh appeals to you, look no further! The Aizle restaurant offers a unique menu, where each dish is designed around a seasonal ingredient. The dishes are of remarkable quality, both taste and visual. Note that the food and wine pairing is very interesting and original, because it includes wines from the four corners of the world that we are not necessarily used to tasting when we live in Switzerland.
Such a fun menu!
We had such a great tasting experience at aizle. The menu of ingredients doesn't give too much away so every dish that comes out is a surprise. There were a mixture of finger food and cutlery needing dishes which were served on imaginative plates and added a playful element. Staff were fantastic. Only minor complaint was that we had to move back our plans for afterwards and then cancel as we were at the restaurant for 2 and a half hours which we didn't expect for being a weeknight and only a few other tables there. Food was fabulous and if that's how long it takes to create then fair enough was worth it.
Best meal we have ever had!
Absolutely incredible from start to finish. Cannot rate this restaurant highly enough. Food impeccable, staff fun and amazing and the venue and vibe was absolutely spot on. If you come to Edinburgh it would be a crime not to visit here 👌🏼
Exceptional
My husband and I have just returned from a 3 night stay in Edinburgh, our favourite city. We were fortunate enough to visit both Aizle and the new restaurant Lyla and were absolutely delighted by the experience at each venue. Both very different but the same excellent standard of cuisine and service. All the staff were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the food and made us feel very special . It was difficult to choose a favourite course as we enjoyed every single one but I think the lamb dish at Aizle was spectacular and it is even more difficult to select a favourite dish from the 10 course menu at Lyla but the lobster hors d’oeuvre was mouthwatering as was the scallop dish and the smoked trout but each course was amazing and the care and attention to detail in the presentation (art on a plate) was spectacular. We would certainly recommend the wine flight and the sommelier at Lyla transported us to the various countries of origin in his amazing description of each delectable wine. A sincere thank you to all staff at each venue who made our visits an experience to treasure we look forward to returning. We would also recommend staying at the superb hotel 21212 where again the service was exceptional
Not all joined up!
Located in the courtyard of the Kimpton Charlotte Square, my first impression was that we had stumbled in to a cafe at a garden centre! Our welcome was less than enthusiastic. We were shown to our table in the corner of the restaurant next to a coatrack and an obsolete computer gathering dust. The corridor around the restaurant was busy with hotel traffic. Not really an aspiring Michelin setting! Service varied from very good to okay. Liked the idea of the 'ingredient list'. Definitely some significant skill in the kitchen with preparation & presentation. Dishes varied from interesting and/or imaginative to okay. Loved the lamb (though odd not to have cutlery with this course) & chocolate orange pumpkin dessert, but not so impressed by the lack luster/flavour monkfish and rather tough duck. Also, not a fan of the rather over-sweet brioche half way through the meal. For my taste, the dishes were generally over-salted. There's good competition in Edinburgh for these 'taster' menu events. Aizle's offering was rather underwhelmed and, in my opinion, there is better value to be had.
The quick: it looks good.
Taste is another thing. They need to have an exercise in increasing their awareness of their dishes & make sure they try their dishes. They will give you 8 courses 3 are great 2 are bad & the other 3 are decent. One dish that they were serving was a tomato round - with some sort of gelatin, with blue cheese on top. The tomato was overpowered by the taste and smell of formaldehyde. It tasted the way a dissected animal smelled, any one in healthcare might have a similar adverse reaction. The steak tartar was poorly executed - and might be what gave my wife stomach troubles later. The fish dish was great, the beet dish was excellent. The lamb skewer was great. They have a long ways to go to be charging for a product that is immature, or inconsistent and not yet fully developed. Ambiance was decent - there was a massive lag between dishes that typically doesn't happen between most Michelin rated restaurants. Some good - some horrible - some ok. Would I pay for this again? Absolutely not. Not trying to be mean - but they seriously need to increase their self awareness and improve their standards. Update: my wife & I got food poisoning- the steak tartare was low quality... debating on what to do. Such a waste and ruined a whole weekend beyond the dining experience
I try to do at least one high end restaurant on a trip and
I try to do at least one high end restaurant on a trip and I did a lot of research that led me to making a reservation at Aizle. I'm not high brow at all, in fact I've made a kind of prejudicial assessment (not mean spirited at all, btw) of people who eat at places like this. There's the rich who find it be just a place to eat, the upper middle who like to brag they can eat at places like this (and are always the loudest people in the room), the people who save up to have an experience and chefs/hospitality workers who want to experience another's cooking/service. I fit into the last two categories and believe me I saw the other categories in this restaurant. I was worried that it would be too high brow, given it's location and the price point but I was surely surprised at how casual the service and décor was. Casual or not, the service was pristine and I was impressed with everyone who worked here. And even though the ambiance was casual, with the garden/outdoor furniture theme, the room was gorgeous and well appointed. We were sat at a lovers bench facing the restaurant and I loved it. It felt super special and like an experience. Then the food started coming out and I was even more impressed. These dishes are plated like works of art and I promise you, pictures cannot do them justice. The menu changes as the weather/availability does so when you go the same items may not be on the menu but let me tell you, the skewers of lamb with mushroom broth were TO DIE FOR. It's been almost a week since we've dined here and I cannot stop thinking about them. I have a feeling it will take me years to get over how delicious that bite of food was. The tasting menu is extensive and you will be fairly full at the end. We did opt for some of the options like the wine pairing and the cheese plate and pairing so we may have been a bit more full but it was worth every penny. This experience is one that shouldn't be missed. Highly recommended.
