Ad Hoc Yountville Reviews from The Last Year

The wife and I made a reservation, came inside to get immediately seated near the window. The staff were wonderful and very welcoming. It was pretty cold inside so make sure you bring a jacket. The menu was their famous fried chicken as the entree and then we added the crab sandwich. It's a set menu for the day listed in black text then you can do add ons with the price in red text. It's served as family style, each person pays a set price, the portions are large and can accommodate the bigger stomach folks. The iceberg lettuce with green goddess sauce was surprisingly flavor packed. The celery was pickled, it added a nice acidic contrast. Another favorite was the mashed potatoes, each bite had a delicious umami flavor with possibly a punch of tang from a lemon? I could not tell, nor could I stop eating it. The fried chicken was crunchy ~ almost like a double fry technique. The inside was juicy and savory. I ate 2 pieces before I tapped out because I was getting full and it was overwhelming to eat that much crunch. We ended with the olive oil cake that was good but I was already full to even eat my own slice. The whole experience was top notch, from the food to the staff, we enjoyed everything ad hoc had to offer!

The fried chicken is good here but does not live up to the hype. We came for the 3-course brunch, which included a spinach salad (this was meh), corned beef hash (the meat was pretty tender but a bit much for me), and monkey bread (my sister loved but I wasn't a fan). Obviously, we also had to get the fried chicken add-on. The breading is pretty thick - thicker than I usual expect - but still pretty good and the two pieces I had were nice and juicy. Sadly the piece my sister got was dry white meat. Although the service was friendly, I wasn't super wow'd by the food.
This comment is strictly for their chicken and service.
First noting...anyone trying to grab a bucket of chicken to go or dine-in for their chicken, it's only available for lunch, not dinner. If you also plan to order in their back outdoor seating area, it is only open from May to August (shared by the host of the restaurant) but anyone is welcomed to sit in their outdoor area throughout the whole year. Great for those who have dogs (they also have a designated patio area for dine-in customers). Now for the chicken. I'm torn here and rate it a 3.5. I will say the crunchiness of the fried chicken and the juiciness of the meat were done perfectly and is a 5/5 in my books. The reason why I rated it a 3.5 was the taste. I felt even though the chicken was cooked perfectly, the flavor was lacking. This is where I was disappointed. (FYI....Bucket of 6 pieces costs about $45) For service, 5/5. The hostess was very helpful and accommodated our requests for our to go order.
I would give this 3 stars but for the price I think it's
I would give this 3 stars but for the price I think it's not worth it - so I am giving 2 stars. We visited on March 16 and the menu was: salad, steak, and panna cotta for dessert. I also got the add-on for chicken and potato chips with caviar. For my young daughter we got the fruit platter and sorbet. The service was very good; they were friendly and considerate. The ambiance was average - nothing bad about it. I especially liked the marinated kumquats on the fruit platter. The broccoli was really well balanced. I was disappointed with the steak. It was chewy and I felt that it was a cheap cut of meat. Including my daughter, there were 4 of us, but she didn't eat from the menu. I paid 430$ for everything (after 18% tip). My two cents is that this wasn't worth what I paid. The steak was a main component and it failed to deliver.
We absolutely love their fried chicken.
That's everyone in the fam, including our two kids (who have wildly different appetites and are very picky eaters normally) and also our Bernadoodle who starts drooling when we approach the restaurant. During the week the quality can vary - wish they did a better job of being consistent in quality. But holidays and weekends have always been fantastic here!
Visiting from Florida and this was definitely the best
Visiting from Florida and this was definitely the best restaurant we've eaten at on our vacation. From the service, food and ambiance this is a 5 star restaurant!!!! We ate the pork, salmon, asparagus and mash potatoes all extremely good! I even loved the salad that started us off. The lemon bar for dessert was good but not great. If you're in the area this is a must!!!! I wish we could have tried the fried chicken that was available at different times. The servers were all very good constantly filling our water cup and asking if we needed anything.
Excellent.
Everything. The service, the informal but classy ambiance, and, of course, the food. See captions for more details, and I hate to tell you that the salad was the best part, but it really, really was. I could have eaten a whole meal of the caviar, salad, and fish and still loved every minute of it.

Hands down the best fried chicken I've ever tasted! The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive and the restaurant is clean and modern with a homey vibe. We loved everything we tried and enjoyed the family style vibe but I will dream about this fried chicken for years to come.
We eat there on a Saturday.
Amazing salad and salmon which was the alternative offer in place of the steak. The salmon was cooked perfectly grilled on the outside, moist inside. Service was very pleasant. The mash potato light and buttery, the vegetable grilled, tasty and great with the salmon and steak my companion had. The only sour note was the desert - peanut butter blondies which did not complement the rest of menu, hard texture and not to my taste. Unfortunate to end the meal that way. Disappointed. Pricey - I may have felt differently if 30% of the meal (desert) matched the rest. Drop the desert course if it cannot match the quality and value of your food. It clashes.

Called numerous and emailed numerous times to ask about planning a dinner for 18. They never got back to me. Guess that's an indication of their service.
Ad hoc
Treat yourself to a Thomas Keller family style dinner, you won’t be disappointed. I had the chicken Parmesan and hope to have fried chicken next time
Good, could’ve been great.
High expectations, that feel below the potential. We ordered the “menu” for tonight., salad (excellent) pinto beans (very good) pork (also very good)… we also added the Nashville hot chicken.. fantastic, and the lobster Mac and cheese.. again very nice! It was soooo much food, and it all came at once.. (I questioned everything coming at the same time and was told , we love you. It was overwhelming! Two of us and enough food for 2x! It would have been nice to have had some guidance on over ordering.., but no such a thing. And the wine paring. $50 a person, Chardonnay, Merlot, and a Sauternes… average at best… Could have easily been a fantastic experience with some appropriate guidance from a waiter that had our best intentions at heart.
Sad Meal at Ad Hoc
We have visited Ad Hoc in the past and loved it, and we looked forward to another fantastic meal last night. However—it was really, really disappointing, as all the diners sitting around us agreed. Swedish meatballs in a rich, overly salted sauce on overcooked noodles, accompanied by green beans(tasty) and a dish of creamy, cheesy potatoes. The finale was an ice cream sundae. What a carb and fat load! Potatoes and noodles, two creamy sauces and sundaes covered in chocolate and whipped cream?! One neighbor couldn’t her meal because of the salt. So—usually a great place, a huge disappointment last night.
Nostalgic Comfort Food
If you want to try a taste of comfort food coupled by recipes created by THE Thomas Keller I suggest you stop in here. We had the pleasure of dining here on a night they were serving the acclaimed chefs buttermilk fried chicken. A recommendation given to us by Cam over at Finesse. Cam Im sorry if i did not spell your name correctly. His recommendation did NOT disappoint. He was also extremely kind and knowledgeable about Chef Kellers restaurants. The drinks are amazing and the salad we started with had a dressing I could drink on its own haha. I had to invest in the Ad Hoc cookbook after this dining experience so I can try to recreate this amazing fried chicken at home. Really would love to return soon and try everything they offer here.
Ad Hoc is amazing!
We had been wanting to experience one of the Thomas Keller restaurants for quite some time now, and during our most recent trip to Napa, we decided to give Ad Hoc a try because it looked much more of a casual environment versus the other outlets with still an amazing looking food quality. We made reservation for Ad Hoc a few weeks in advance through Tock for dinner and arrived promptly at our dinner time. There's plenty of parking on the street for free and I think they may also have a private parking lot as well. We entered and were warmly greeted by the host and were promptly brought to our table and our server came by a few minutes later to introduce himself. We brought a bottle of wine as well and I think it was a $20 corkage fee. For dinner, there is a 4 course menu for $64 a person and they also have wine pairings for $55/person, and they have a full bar and wine list as well. For this particular evening, they started us with a delicious and fresh mixed greens and fruit salad which was absolutely amazing and a plenty big portion for the two of us to share. For the next course, we had Mediterranean Chicken Thighs and couscous with a yogurt sauce. For the third course we had a cheese board, and to close the meal we have a Vanilla Panna Cotta. All food was absolutely amazing and fresh, and a great quality. All employees were very well trained and explained each dish in full detail, including the food runners. It was truly an amazing dining experience and we look forward to returning during our next trip to Napa!
Southern food done by Thomas Keller
Can’t get into the French Laundry? Like Southern food and a surprise? Try this place ~$50 per person 4-course Southern delight! Homemade ice cream sundaes on Sunday, We had root beer floats from heaven on this particular night. Wonderful staff & atmosphere-inside a bit loud, we opted to eat outside. Fantastic wine pairing options too. Come hungry portions are generous. Menu rotates frequently…
Outstanding informal delight
The food is exceptional. The menu is fixed but the quality and balance is excellent. The ingredients include locally sourced produce. We added wine pairings as well. There is plenty of food, repeat, generous portions. The atmosphere is informal but upscale. Staff are well trained. There are add ons to the menu but you have so much food as it is, they are really for the table to taste. Extensive wine list and cocktails. You can check the menu daily online as it changes.
Just ok
We were so looking forward to our return visit here, the first time we came here we had an excellent meal. This time was not great. Our salad was salted to the point of being inedible. We let our server know who said she would replace it but we didn’t bother. The fried chicken was good, but not as good as I remembered and the sides were just ok. The wine pairing was well suited to the courses, with the pours being average. The service was the highlight, it was excellent, no complaints there. Not sure I’m in a hurry to return with so many other options in the area.
Lived up to the hype.
I know everyone's mileage is going to vary when you visit the "accessible" restaurant from a high-end chef, but we could not have been more pleased with the family-style meal we had at Ad Hoc. From the salad to the roast chicken to the night's special of "hog fries" (decadent but too good to pass up) to dessert, everything was delicious and the service was on-point. We'd love to go to the French Laundry at some point in the future, but until then, this definitely checked a lot of our Napa/Sonoma cuisine boxes!
So LOUD!
Awful! So loud could not hear the server! Food was “ok.” Could not wait to leave! So many fantastic places to eat in Yountville….skip this one!
