Abe & Louie's Boston Reviews from The Last Year
Was recently here on weekend in Boston - not impressed with
Was recently here on weekend in Boston - not impressed with my waiter initially who didn't describe the specials to me and who wasn't very informative on the dishes. I ordered a special appetizer - lobster croquettes and when I asked him the difference between the special and another item , the lobster dumplings - his answer was "one is a chef special and the other is a corporate dish" Huh? Anyway the croquettes were 99% potatoes and I complained to the Manager, Sandy, who was fabulous- he took the croquettes off my bill and gave me the lobster dumplings on the house. He also fixed my medium filet mignon which came out medium rare. He saved the day otherwise rating would have been one star

Excellent customer service, and the food is incredible, our waiter Christopher #628 was very knowledgeable and attentive to detail, he made sure our food was impeccable and would check in every time a new dish would arrive to make sure the temperature was right on. They started us with freshly bread and butter, We started with an appetizer a delicious Bacon Nueske's bacon, blue cheese, whole grain mustard, Peppadew relish, followed by the 50 days dry aged New York and the Bone in Aged prime Ribeye accompany with asparagus absolutely delicious Our drinks were refreshing and just the right amount of liquor not sweet or bitter(Elevated strawberry Gin and Tonic) and lastly we finished with seven layer chocolate cake. I would highly recommend this place, thank you Christopher for the lovely experience my fiancé and I had.
Made a birthday dinner reservation here on a Tuesday night.
The place was packed, so the slow service was expected. However, our waiter was rude, made us feel awkward for asking questions about the menu and rarely checked on us. We had to flag people down to order another drink and ask for a steak knife. When we were paying, the waiter learned it was my fiance's birthday and only said "you should've told me before, I would've brought dessert." We were still there and he easily could have...not the point though. We asked the waiter for to-go boxes and when we were leaving, still didn't have the boxes. Couldn't find our waiter so asked the host and he talked to our waiter who said we said to throw it out. I had half a steak and 2 nearly untouched sides left!! And we clearly asked to box it up. All they offered was a drink at the bar... at 10:30 pm on a Tuesday, mind you, to make up for the lost food. Our bill was over $400! Food is great, but never going back because of the lack of customer service.
I just left here and I feel like I have to write this
I just left here and I feel like I have to write this rewiew. I go here at least once a year. For the expectation of this establishment, I am shocked that they allowed a non patron on patio who stood next to my table in pants that had been recently urinated on and defacated. Of, note the server was storing the non patrons belongings underneath the patio tables. I am not against helping others, but this was too much for the price of this establisment.
I haven't been back here in almost 20 years, and it's
I haven't been back here in almost 20 years, and it's pretty unchanged as a Back Bay institution. I just did a casual lunch here and got a table outside, and outdoor dining always feels like such a luxury in Boston. They start you out with a nice bread basket with a cranberry bread, rolls, and a wheat bread. They made a great grey goose dirty martini. It was a large portion, and it came with some extra on the side that they kept on ice for me, which was awesome. For my lunch, I got a lobster salad because hey - it's Boston. It was a half lobster plus a generous amount of lightly dressed lobster salad. This salad bit the spot. Service was great - formal and professional yet personable, as you would hope for an old school steak and seafood place. I also appreciated the music on the patio, which made it a more fun and casual atmosphere during lunch.
As usual food is delicious, but service was very slow.
It was a regular busy night, but they were short staffed.
Top notch, great experience! If you're looking for
Top notch, great experience! If you're looking for something a step (or two) above the rest, this is your place. Everything you'd expect from a select steak house. Service, atmosphere, food quality, presentation, etc. I don't mind paying a little more for food & service that warrants it, and A&L's is well well worth it. 100% recommended

Visiting boston with my family and decided to come here for dinner. First off, our waiter was just not friendly and seemed that all she wanted to do was just serve us and get us out of there. Furthermore, the food itself was mediocre at best, we had a salad, a chowder, a tartar, a steak, a fish and a risotto. Everything was below par and the worst of all was by far the Tomahawk state, heavily undercooked. I asked for it medium and this is what they brought. After complaining they didn't apologize or do anything about it, we barely touched it and left promptly after.
I love this restaurant! I have been twice with my family
I love this restaurant! I have been twice with my family and we love everything we order. The steak is delicious, mashed potatoes great, wine delicious. The only thing I would note is ambiance differs pretty significantly throughout the restaurant so we got two different vibes the two different times we went. However, service and food is great!
Some things are just too good to be true.
A year ago, I dubbed this as the best steak I ever had. I was excited to return here for my birthday dinner, and unfortunately left disappointed. The service was subpar (some might say rude), our steaks were not cooked to our request and had to be sent back, and my NY Strip lacked even a single granule of salt or seasoning. I'm not sure if there's a new chef or what, but I sure won't be calling Abe & Louie's my favorite steakhouse anymore and that's a shame.
Went here recently for my birthday dinner.
The service was good our waiter was good nothing to complain about. For the food me and my son was very disappointed. I had gotten the Pan seared cod with lobster corn risotto($72). The risotto was super dried and tasteless. My son had gotten the porterhouse for two and his cut of meat was not good. It was rough/chewy and very flavorless. Their filet and ribeye was soft and delicious though. Not sure if we will return just because the other two entrée was awful.

This place has always been close to our hearts! For 20+ years. Tonight wasn't the best. Initial greeting was strange, table was in the main walkway. Reservations were made a couple months ago? Service fell flat. Our server never introduced herself, had to ask her name. Food was good! Crab cocktail is our favorite! Creamed corn separated. Shame. Ribeye was decent. Yeah, so for our anniversary, not as perfect as I would have liked it.

Just for the heck of it, looked back to see if any management or staff from Abe & Louie's responded to the review that I left on 4/21/24- one week ago. I think I might put it on a couple different social media outlets to see if they respond. It just goes to show that they don't care who you are, how much money you've spent there, and how they do business. It was people like me that help build your business to get where you are.

We were there on a Sunday, the brunch was very good, recommended. Very good atmosphere and very good service! We recommend it, we will return.
I have been coming Abe &Louies for close to 15-20 years.
I was very disappointed tonight. Food was terrible, gone way down hill. There are people dressed in sweatpants, sneakers, and tye-dyed T-shirts. Come on Abe & Louie's, I will not be recommending this as a top steakhouse in Boston, Moo (another older steakhouse in Boston) is still far better. Capital Grille and Del Frisco's would have been better tonight. I have done so many dinner meetings for business with your establishment over the years, and I was really disgusted at the fellow dining clientele as well. You should really re- instill your dress policy, your restaurant look like it was filled with gang members!! Just the quality of the food was terrible. The service was OK. Overall disappointing. I wish I had gone across the street to Gordon Ramsay's. Just disappointing after being a big fan over the years ,I wouldn't recommend you was a top steakhouse in Boston, nor would I rate you five stars, but one star tonight. The blue cheese crust on the filet was not cooked properly, it was runny... $250 dinner down the drain... I had a chef and restaurant owner with me tonight, and I was embarrassed to bring him to your establishment, touting how great you guys were... step it up??

We walked in without a reservation and they had a table for us. It was pretty crowded as well. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. Lots of choices on the menu and I had the ribeye and it was delicious. The family did Mac and cheese, with side salad with chicken on it, and side of fries. We sat in a booth just on the other side of the wall from where we checked in and it was nice.

The dining room was covered in dark wood and leather and art tastefully placed. The wait staff looked prepared and ready to serve, kind, friendly and attentive. The food was GREAT! The Abe's Seafood Tower was stuffed with seafood well worth it! the Thick-Cut Nueske's Bacon was off the CHAIN! delicious! OMG! my Pear & Goat Cheese Salad was a delightful sweet & salty combination and so fresh. My Atlantic Swordfish, Provençale style was really good, meaty and succulent. Now the Lobster Macaroni & Cheese really met my expectations. I didn't need to search for the lobster in fact it was very noticeable and abundant. The Mascarpone Cheesecake berry compote was so rich, I, (the lover of sweets) couldn't even finish it. We were so engaged in conversation and the food that I failed to get any pics. I know, shame on me! But the ones here are from Opentable, except for the cheesecake pics. Click the link below for the full review! https://youtu.be/UeRF_014Aas
Great steak house conveniently located in Back Bay.
The food is great and the servers are very friendly and welcoming.
What shocked me was a worn indifference to the presentation
What shocked me was a worn indifference to the presentation and cleanliness of the place. It's a declining dowager that was once beautiful, but time has taken its toll. Resting on laurels also manifests in dull steak knives, listless side dishes, and aging carpets that need a good vacuum. Men's room was not clean. In addition I thought the greeting was from the host desk wasn't 'crisp'. That says a lot about management and the overall operation right out of the gate. The waiter was a total professional, much like how European waiters handle their guests; he anticipated everything and was always near but not obtrusive. He was an older gentleman that made it look effortless. The steak was decent, and should be for caviar-strata money. Would I go back? Naw. As a general rule steakhouses are overrated to begin with, however I have found that a better experience is to be had at Eddie V's. If I'm gonna pay top money I may as well get an overall better experience that is clean and attention to detail is integrated into everything that is done at the restaurant.
Nice atmosphere and wonderful waitress, but the food is
Nice atmosphere and wonderful waitress, but the food is very underwhelming for this price. Came for the lobster risotto which turned out to be very salty and cheesy and quite disappointing. The lemon ricotta cake tastes store bought, very dry to be served in a restaurant like this.
I was taken here for a Mother's Day dinner.
.. the vibes were nice, dim lit, nice music playing in the background, staff were very welcoming, family friendly, you'll find people of all over here. I don't remember what everything was called but I do remember the everything that we ordered was so good and cooked to perfection; from the apps and entrees to the drinks and dessert. Loved everything about this place. Definitely stop by here for a date night or any special occasion!

WOW! We didn't have any reservation for this night so when we were able to walk in and be seated immediately we were happy. The restaurant was packed and the ambiance was 10/10 with dimmed lights in an elevated and classy scenery. We loved our servers, they were so kind and always had a smile on their face! The Tomahawk steak was amazing and the garnish on top enhanced the taste of our steak with our olfactory senses! We also saw a first: a lemon cover so the lemon seeds don't spread over our food -- wow! The desert was great as well. The server brought it out and poured over the butterscotch in front of us. What a great culinary experience in the most relaxing, cozy, and elevated space!
The food is very well worth the money for the special
The food is very well worth the money for the special occasion dinner we had planned. It was highly noisy. The tables are fairly close together. (NO FAULT TO RESTURANT) I won't fault the restaurant for the rude group of men that sat two tables over (8ppl) we also had 8 and could hardly hear each other over them making sexual and degrading jokes. We obviously got the wrong time/night. The appetizers are really Sharable size which I wish we'd known BEFORE we had ordered. The drinks were HARD liquor only. Cranberry/crown was all crown. Then it was celebrating the 30th birthday and they asked for special request and I said "just do something if you have it" The waiter said they'd did candles on desert which sounded great. (The kitchen forgot the candles and it kinda was that bummer moment). The staff was very friendly and nice through out the process; however the down side it took FOREVER to do anything. The group mentioned prior sat approx 40 minutes after us and left and 30 before us. 4hours for dinner was not ideal.
Fantastic leek soup and cod on restaurant menu
I went for restaurant week. The Leek soup was smooth and fantastic! It was amazing. The bbq cod was also very good! The steaks are always done perfectly. I will return.
A Really Good Night For Eating Steak
We thoroughly enjoy eating at Abe & Louie's. It has a really upbeat environment and a unique steakhouse decor. The steaks are alway good and cooked to perfection. My wife eats their salmon. We had au gratin potatoes and a iceberg blue cheese salad which were delicious. The service was top notch and prices comparable to the area.
We love it but we want this place to be better.
Creamed Spinach: Too greasy can’t even taste the spinach, not up to the steak house standards. Lobster Ravioli: the sauce doesn’t do it for the lobster. Sauce was so underwhelming we didn’t eat the rest of the lobster. Waste. We absolutely love this steak house, we come here all the time but the food always underwhelms our expectations. Honestly, the only reason we wanted to write this review is because we really would love to come here more often, and for a satisfying dinner. Again, we love Abe and Louis as Bostonians but want to have this gem better.
So Loud !!
Always love Abe & Louie’s but last night noise was excessive. So so loud. Celebrating my mom’s 91st birthday but could not hear conversation at our table despite round table for 6 at the window. Table next to us left due to noise (actually glad they did - baseball cap on at the table, cell phone call - no no) Bobby is a terrific server and food never disappoints. Perfectly cooked tomahawk, sirloins and sides. Hopefully acoustic company will be brought in to remedy noise situation. Loudest ever this visit.
Too noisy to eat…
We went in and couldn’t hear each other speak. It was like a sports bar… With hundreds of people and meat dishes stsrting at 68 $… So, for the first time in my life, we left without having had a meal… So, I can’t say anything about the food, and the staff was very understandig.
Great food, GREAT NOISE!!!
LOUD LOUD LOUD!!! OMG!!! The steaks were great, really good. Drinks were fabulous -- we didn't have to wait long at all for drinks or for the meal. The service was a little nutso -- kind of reminded me of the scene in "Polar Express" where all the waiters are flying around with dishes, picking them up, putting them down, fly in, fly out...For a Thursday evening around 6pm, it was quite crowded. The ambiance in the room isn't like a traditional steak house -- feels more like a college frat bar! The noise was simply...(wait, I think my ears just cleared, finally)...no way to have any kind of a conversation at a reasonable volume. Romantic? Not so much. I'm 68 years old and have some hearing loss...the room volume made it doubly difficult to hear conversation at my table. Although the food was really good (the cake and ice cream at the end was amazing!), I don't see myself going back again. Too loud!!
Food is better than the service
It's not good enough when you arrive at the time of your booking and you're 'invited' to wait at the bar for 15mins. If I kept the restaurant waiting 15mins I'd loose the table!!! A smile from Alain wouldn't have gone a miss either. Agree with many previous reviews on the food - good quality, well seasoned & served promptly. 3* rating is for overall experience, would rate 5* for food & wine.
Should have ordered from Outback…
Sorry to say this, but we visited here this past weekend after seeing the rave reviews. We had a reservation and still waited a while to be seated. Four of us each ordered steak. 2 of us ordered 8oz filets cooked med-well. One came out perfect, the other was hardly cooked at all. Husbands steak came out well done and he ordered it med-rare. One of the table side baked potatoes never came, and they were not made table side either. Just overall very disappointing to have a bill well over $500 and have mediocre at best food.
Good choice for dinner/birthday
I brought my wife for dinner and the service and food was excellent, usually when going to other restaurants there's something they don't get right, but both times I've been to Abe & Louie's they got everything right - awesome food, steak, pork and sides we had!

Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
