Nobody Asked For Your Ego With Dinner
I just want to preface that I've worked in fine dining for 10+ years and have NEVER complained about service once, but this was an experience unlike anything I've ever had (and have been trained to avoid in my career) I understand Valentine's Day seating in a Michelin star restaurant. I understand how big of a wrench a late seating throws into the greater plan of service. I get it, I really do. I apologize for showing up about 30m late, but in our defense we tried to let you know. It was raining tonight, which in general leads to increased traffic times in the city. I took that into consideration when taking a car service, and still it didn't work out in our favor. I made sure to call ahead before I was late to let them know I would be arriving later than my reservation. I called 6 times, no answer, only to show up to the OWNER/CHEF (Greg Lutes) telling me he was about to give my table away. I let him know I had called multiple times, and he very cheerily let me know they do not answer the phone during service. Not once did he tell me he was going to call the phone number I gave upon booking to see if we were on our way, just flat out cancellation. After arriving and explaining to the owner the situation, he not only told us he was about to give our reservation away but informed us we would be rushed through our tasting. To be expected honestly, but I was turned off as to no accommodation to give us an optimal experience. No effort into potentially moving us to a later seating or switching to a different day. Paying about $800 for 2 dinners with wine pairings, I'd think they'd at least be KIND when telling me the time crunch with my table at minimum. The customer service and table side manner left something to be desired. After seating us, the owner proceeded to talk poorly of us within earshot. "The 630 reservation showed up promptly!" Was not something I wanted to hear after being seated. I get it, we were late. But it's in poor taste to let your guests hear your distaste. He then proceeded to say several other crude comments before heading back to the host stand. I've seen coworkers of mine fired for less. The fact that I heard the owner talking that way about me was absolutely abhorrent. I've always been trained to keep my opinions to myself in these situations, and to hear an owner speak that way so nonchalantly was jarring. Food was amazing. Wine was incredible. All other staff members were so kind and professional. Not once did any of them rush us along during our meal or made us feel pressured to speed up. That part of the experience was exceptional. I can not stand pompous ownership with poor customer service skills. He was very present and kind at every other table, yet he only touched ours once and was fairly cold. I'm sure this won't affect him in the slightest, but I hope anyone who is stumbling upon this place thinks twice before spending as much money as I did. Also, if this is the way he treats his clientele, I can't imagine how he treats his staff....
Be the first to ReplyChef's Tasting Menu: totally overpriced
I had the Chef's Tasting Menu and left with mixed feelings. While the service was very good and considerate, the quality of the nine courses was pretty varied. Some outstanding dishes were followed by pretty mediocre ones. Especially the meat (venison from Texas) was overcooked and its presentation almost banale. Also, I found they overdid it with the Asian-type souces which totally dominated the fish dishes. The deserts were disappointing and lacked finesse. No special attention ("amuse-bouche"), not even a cup of coffee offered at the end of the meal. The whole thing was rushed through, it took less than two hours and might have been even faster, had I not explicitly told the waitrer to slow down a bit. On the positive side: the chef did come to see me twice, and the wine pairing was quite nice, they did also replace one of the wines I didn't like. But overall, the value for money was not spectacular and I seriously wonder whether the experience was worth the pretty long Uber ride from downtown San Francicso.
Be the first to ReplyYour mouth, belly and mind will thank you
Yesss!! you absolutely come here for the tasting menu and splurge for the wine pairings because they absolutely took my palette to another level, but even if you are not a wine drinker, the dishes are amazing. As mentioned by others, the uni crรจme brรปlรฉe is divine and my second favorite from the tasting was the baja striped bass. I added the A5 as well and that was melt in your mouth deliciousness. Who charges $75 just to reserve a table, with the assurance that it will not be refunded if you cancel within 3 days? I just haven't seen this practice for just a regular dinner, at restaurants that are far better (such as those I note below), as opposed to a special occasion like New Year's Eve. We ate at 5:30pm on an ordinarily Saturday evening in February, and the only other people in the restaurant were one couple at another table and two at the bar.
The service was not stellar, but okay. The food also appeared quite quickly. The wine was also excellent, if a bit overpriced.
The spaghetti squash/comte/kale fritter appetizer was excellent, as was the potato leek soup.
The lobster risotto ($31 for a half portion, $62 for full) wasn't even a rice that would ordinarily be used to make risotto, despite asking the chef. It was severely undercooked, so I had to send it back. The restaurateur, who we heard loudly criticizing one of his staff in the open kitchen, came out and defended it as al dente, how he was taught to make it. Taught by whom? Every risotto I have had, such as from Greens, Millennium, and in Italy, has been soft, ovular, and creamy, not straight, chewy, and tangy. The lobster chunks themselves were delicious (though they should have been bathed in more butter), but since I was sending it back, I only had one bite.
My mother had the porcini mushroom ravioli. The flavors were lovely, but the pasta required cutting with a knife. This kind of pasta shouldn't be hard and chewy; it should melt in your mouth.
As replacement for the risotto, I got the scallops and pork belly. Two scallops. Scallops are difficult to get right, I'll give you that. But they are delicate creatures, with subtle flavor, so seasoning them so intensely that they disappear isn't appropriate. Pork belly, on the other hand, usually is moist with rich fat and has strong, bold flavor of its own; these two little pieces were almost flavorless and a little dry.
We didn't order dessert because it seemed that every item on that menu was trying to do five different things instead of focusing on the virtues of the main ingredient.
Food looked better than it tasted
I made a reservation on Tock that requires at $25 deposit with your reservation. I mainly came here for the uni creme brulee because I absolutely love uni - it's one of my favorite things to eat in life. They required proof of vaccination to eat indoors.
UNI CREME BRรLรE $29
reserve caviar, trout roe, yuzu tobiko, crostini
*I didn't love the creme brรปlรฉe, I think it overwhelmed the caviar and delicate uni. I also wish they served more crostinis because I was slopping generous portions on the crostini and I ran out so I just had to use my spoon to eat the rest. It came with 5 and 6 would be ideal but 7 would be amazing!
1/2 Portion of LOBSTER RISOTTO $27
chard, leeks, pastis
*this was my least favorite dish - I didn't love the the accompaniments of the chard, leeks and pastis, the entire dish was super bland and needed salt and I didn't even like the risotto to be honest - it reminded me of of the texture of old fashioned oatmeal
CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE CAKE $12
passion fruit, candied almonds, toasted sesame ice cream
*nice gooey center but the entire souffle was very soft, I wish the edges were a little more firm, I still enjoyed the dessert
Overall I thought the food looked better than it tasted and worth a one time visit but I wouldn't be interested in coming back.
Completely subpar - a real dissapointment
I have been to 3rd cousin multiple times and have generally found it to be expensive for the quality of food. However, this evening was an absolute disaster and ranks among my worst dining experiences worldwide.
I placed an advanced (1 week ahead of time) order for take-away Thanksgiving - cost of $135 per person (after tax, tip, etc.) so the expectation is that this be a fine dining experience, or, realistically, as close as a take out meal can provide. The plate of food I received after waiting 90 min past the scheduled pickup time (an experience shared by all diners that night) from 3rd Cousin that evening would not have passed muster at a greasy all-night diner. Let alone as a $135 / plate, fine dining meal. A breakdown of the meal (photo included)
- The turkey: I was given scraps - literal scraps of meat that were left on the carcass. These chunks (not slices) were composed of 50% fat and barely edible
- The sweet potato: I received approx 1 tablespoon serving. Unremarkable and literally looked like someone had put it in there by mistake it was such a small piece.
- Mashed Potatoes: A slightly larger serving of uninspired mashed potatoes that tasted like something I would get at my high school cafeteria.
- Stuffing: Tasty! actually the highlight of this sad excuse for a holiday meal. Unfortunately I was only given about 2 tablespoons of this
- A surprise substitution! Upon getting home I discovered that the chef felt it was fine to substitute a spaghetti squash fritter with what was likely easy-mac. An absolute sub-par, mushy pasta with a tasteless "cheese?" sauce.
- A 2nd surprise substitution! instead of the little gem salad I received a bowl of pre-washed, straight from the bag romaine lettuce with a bland creamy dressing
- green beans - well cooked but coated in a disgustingly creamy sauce that hid any sense of the vegetable
I understand that things go wrong, but there is no way the chef should have let this sad excuse for a plate of food leave the kitchen. No apology was made. No explanation was given. Nothing. The entire staff just went on as if it was normal to serve this garbage. Our neighborhood deserves better than what 3rd cousin is serving. I'll echo the sentiment of many customers leaving 3rd Cousin that night: "Never again!"
Wonderful food, unfortunately a rude Chef/Owner
Went for restaurant wk, Greeted warmly at 6PM, friendly server. Requested our 4 course meal to be served 1 dish at a time as we were sitting side-by-side and planned to share each dish. 1st course came out BOTH fried dishes. Ordered the supplement of uni ($15). I was unsure if we were to enjoy the uni with 1 of the dishes-fritters, battered oysters-both delicious.
Chef was standing in front of us so I said "excuse me" he said "just a minute I'm busy entering an order". At this point maybe 5 or 6 tables had people at them. I asked the uni qtn, he berated the server in front of us bc the uni had not been ordered and he yelled "fire an uni".
While we were eating these 2 dishes, a salad was placed in front of us. I requested to server to please slow this down. We were enjoying the pretty plates, tasty and thoughtful food when the Chef approached with 2 desserts and said "sorry I need to turn this table". I was horrified. Chef then came said "how was dinner?"
I replied "your staff is wonderful, your food is delicious and you are rude". Husband was shocked as I have never made a big deal about a less than stellar experience.
$480 on dinner ($80 was tip). $600 "evening": 1:45 minutes in a car, 1:45 mins consuming a rushed but otherwise terrific dinner.
I cannot imagine why a Chef would treat well-dressed, polite patrons (who ordered other menu items and additional wines ,and always minimally tip 20% on the entire tab) with such disregard.
Celebrating engagemang
A real disappointment! We booked our tablefor 8.30 pm and had to wait 45 minutes at a place that looked like a closet! The food was no good , and they tried to fool us with the wine! Serving a โPort wineโ!that was absolutely not a Port!! Felt insulted!!
Be the first to ReplyBirthday celebration
We enjoyed this Bernal Heights gem on Cortland Avenue. The menu changes daily. We shared fried fritters of Brentwood sweet corn, comte cheese, kale with sofrito & za'atar and black truffle raviolis 'francese' with porcini mushrooms. Our entree was Alaskan halibut, baby artichoke, spring vegetable barigoule with a charred ramp emulsion. We each had a glass of rosรฉ Rhone wine plus Illy coffee to go with desserts of pistachio cake & upside down meyer lemon tart. It's worth the trip!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious meals, neighborhood gem
Went for a birthday celebration and enjoyed the lower priced prix fixe meal and an individual glass of wine. The dishes were artful and tasty, certainly rating among the top 10%-20% in the city (there's a high bar here) in variety, execution and taste. It's a little out-of-the-way (Bernal Heights) for those more centrally located, but enjoyable for an adventure out of the more travelled areas. The decor is handsome and minimalist, the service very friendly.
Be the first to ReplyGood food and good sevice in a good atmosphere
The atmosphere is very good and the service is good and friendly. Was relative far from our place but it was worse to take the time to get there
Be the first to ReplyBetween Average and Very Good. Beware of the 5% extra mandate charge before your tips
I left the rating at Average. The actual rating should be somewhere between average and Very good.
Nice Atmosphere, no view though even though the front is a big window
Ingredients are fresh, cook timing is good, no overcook, dishes lean towards heavy flavor, the chef did not handle my order well in the flavor management, he may be fine with the tasting menu. As my wife did not want to do the tasting menu and they only do tasting for the whole table, I could not try the tasting menu.
They mentioned that many of the entries in the tasting menu actually are listed in the appetizer section. Because I wanted to try different dishes, we ordered 6 appetizers. Each dish was done reasonably well, however, as the flavor was more in the heavy side. I only had white wine to clear my palate between dishes. It didn't quite work after 3 dishes. I could not enjoy the flavor of the rest of the dishes.
So, I would imagine the chef should have warned us after we put in the order or adjust/order the dishes such that we could enjoy. By the way, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th appetizers came all at once. I certainly didn't appreciate that.
Overall, the food was ok, however, the use of flavor has room for improvement.
Also, beware of the 5% mandate charge by the restaurant in the bill before your tips.
