Disappointing
Having read so many great reviews, we were looking forward to the trip to 36 on the Quay. The setting didn't disappoint and nor did either the ambience or the service. However, this is a restaurant, and a supposedly superb one, too. If you get what you pay for, I think we 'were done'. The dishes we ordered - steak, fish, venison - would have been nothing special (and small!) had they been hot, but the food didn't even manage to be that. Yes, there were appetisers and 'pre-desserts' to be had and lots of little extras, all of which looked good and some of which tasted nice, but cold venison on cold parsnip with cold kale served on cold plates? Good company and ambience don't really make up for the problems here.

We went for a birthday meal here last night and to be honest I hadnโt rated this place in the past and was a little nervous about the food. I will tell you a little something this restaurant has to be the best in Emsworth the food is absolutely fantastic every course was beautiful , we all had an amazing experience there and the Japanese A5 fillet of beef was outstanding. Thank you to the chef and the waitress really made my evening.

Despite living close by, we had not visited for many years having previously thought it was stuffy and out of date. What a pleasant and exciting surprise, not only is the decor contemporary but the food was also top draw. Eating from the three course menu effectively became a six or seven course meal, all beautifully created and presented. It was a fun evening out and we will be back.
Be the first to Replyvery 'fine dining': good value 'set menu'
Food was most interesting, well cooked, beautifully presented (and photogenic). Service assumed we would be happy - not once was our opinion canvassed - not even how well done should our meat be cooked (nor were we offered the - very good value - โSet Menuโ until we requested explicitly. I did notice (other diners on โa la carteโ) received โamuse boucheโ before starters - a nice touch.

Booked in advance to advise of food allergies. Had the 'A la Carte' and was treated to a fabulous 3 course meal, with extra 'courses' in between. Lovely bottle of wine too. They took real trouble to advise of what was OK to eat, avoiding spicey, and highly flavoured options. Gluten free bread was also supplied. An absolute treat and highly recommended.

We were really excited to come here to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We had been here a few years ago, but heard they got a Michelin star so was really looking forward to great food and service! Unfortunately we were let down with both. We went for the tasting menu which started off well but went downhill half-way through. There was too long a wait in-between courses, which meant by the end we just felt hungry! after spending this amount of money, we shouldn't be coming away feeling hungry. For us the service let this place down the most. It was the little things such as not taking my coat when seated (Iโm not sure why as I was the only one with a coat on the back of may chair they had hung everyone elseโs?), they never poured the wine and we had to keep asking for water (again, no attention to detail), on two of our courses that were served, the waiter didn't even bother telling us what he was serving (they did of the other courses). I appreciate it was a busy Saturday night however we have had far better service (and food) at restaurant 27 in Southsea and this was also on a busy Saturday night so they cannot use this as an excuse. Me and my husband donโt get to go out very often for nice meal without the kids so we very disappointed and unfortunately wouldnโt recommend. I just wish we had a better experience for our rare night out!

This restaurant is simply superb and deserves to be rated a 5 onTripadvisor, not to mention worthy of a Michelin star ( which surely must be on its way in this yearโs Michelin Guide?). The tasting menu is excellent and good value ( 8 courses + canapรฉs + amuse bouche + pre- dessert = 11 courses!). The menu is well balanced and the flavours push the boundaries ( in a subtle way). Highlights on last nightโs tasting menu ( which seems to change regularly) were lobster with potato and truffle oil, scallops with pumpkin purรฉe and praline and a most beautiful dessert of a sea buckthorn parfait topped in toasted caramel crumbs with a chocolate ice cream. Every single course was beautifully presented and full of flavour.

Wedding anniversary and it was ok but not memorable, went for the Taster menu and did not tick enough boxes, perhaps to many flavours. Staff were great very efficient.

Wonderful, food Wine. To be served by a professional waiter, so rare these days. We were visiting Goodwood races from Sweden. We're recommended the restaurant by staff at Goodwood Hotel. A meal we will never forget.

After reading so many amazing reviews we thought weโd treat ourselves to the tasting menu with wines. On arrival we werenโt welcomed into the restaurant we made our own way to the tables where we waited for someone to welcome us. The surroundings, cutlery and crockery are beautiful, top quality. The first few courses were amazing. We were then served the bbq octopus, citrus corn. The octopus was so chewy and dry and the citrus corn was like sucking a lemon. Not enjoyable. The next course was local squid, basil dashi. It was like soy sauce soup. The only thing you could taste was salt. This left a disgusting taste in out mouths which no amount of water could remove. To be honest it just went from bad to worse. We asked the waitress to stop serving us as we were beginning to feel unwell. The waitress deducted some money from the bill, we paid and left. It was an awful evening, sevice was not great. One member of our party asked questions regarding the wine but the questions were never answered. I would have loved to have paid the whole bill plus tip and of had a the wonderful evening we were expecting. Would never ever return to this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyA Michelin star must surely be in the offing?
We dined again at 36 on the Quay tonight- our 4th visit in the last couple of months having re-discovered the restaurant after a few years absence. It is an amazing restaurant- the food, service and ambiance are all superb. The food is truly amazing and Gary is cooking at Michelin star standards- a star must surely be in the offing? On all 4 occasions we have had the 8 course tasting menu ( 10 if you also include the canapรฉs and amuse bouche). Each time the menu has been different. The flavours are exciting - octopus with raisin and carrot, lamb tikka with mint and cucumber. Even classics are given an exciting twist - steak and chips with tomato ketchup turns out to be Wagyu beef with deep fried chickpea chips and fermented tomatoes. I am blown away by the food. The tasting menu is very reasonably priced given the number of courses and quality of the food ยฃ79 pp. They also offer an interesting wine pairing. Very friendly ( but professional) service in a lovely location on Emsworth Quay. I just hope that when the restaurant gets its well deserved Michelin star we can still get a table!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful birthday meal
Had the most wonderful birthday meal at 36 on the Quay. Every course was delicious, the service was faultless. We all had a great time. Only slight disappoint was the tiramisu, not because it wasnโt delicious, purely because 3 of the party (including myself) love love love a tiramisu and it is our go to dessert! That said it was very delicious, even if not what was expected. It was also my birthday and they added really nice touches to make it a special evening. Would definitely recommend and come again!

We stayed here on a 2 night Gourmet Break. What a delightful experience from start to finish. A very warm welcome, a comfortable room with fantastic views and outstanding food. As well as a brilliant chef the front of house team weโre all fantastic. A family run business which deserves all the accolades it has (and more). Will definitely return.
Be the first to Reply2 course lunch - excellent
Thank you for an absolutely fantastic lunch. We had never eaten at a Michelin starred restaurant before, and this was an amazing experience. From burnt yeast butter with fresh bread, to plum sorbet, in addition to our orders, the experience was one that will stick with us for many years to come. The venison main was delicious, and the chocolate kiss dessert was a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. Apart from a few problems with the water carafe the meal moved gracefully between stirring curiosity, delight and a new appreciation of some tastes and combinations that were new to us. "I like ginger, I like apple, I like sorrel and I like chocolate, but I would never know how to put them together" - until now (not that I actually have the skill for such a spectacular dessert) The only time when the expectation didn't quite live up to the plate presented was the tirimasu. It was tasty, but it would have been helpful to explain it was deconstructed and not really a tirimasu (we are all mascarpone die hards what can I say). But otherwise, such a lovely way to finally be able to celebrate together after years of restrictions, and we will definitely be coming back. Thank you!

Wow what a cuisine, just suberb, mackerel beautifully rare with pine nuts, venison again rare with celeriac and a deconstructed Tiramisu. Wonderful mixture of taste and an interesting presentation. Worthy of more Michelin stars. We live a long way but we hope to be back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat local street food at the harbour
Have used this van throughout the pandemic and beyond. Personally, I love the great fish wraps and chips of all kinds, a little different and very generous servings. Needs to be open every day in the spring/summer as little competition for 'take out' food during the day. Great to sit on the harbour wall and take in the view in the sunshine. Good coffee too.
