With great anticipation, I came here for dinner on a Tuesday with a friend. There is no way to make a reservation, and with very few tables in 1or8, we took a chance. There was a party of 3 who arrived literally minutes before we did, and so began the wait. We were allowed to sit indoors at a large wooden table near the entrance engaged in quiet conversation while we waited. It had to be about 20+ minutes of waiting? This is a restaurant where people come to linger, so after the party of 3 was seated, we waited some more. Finally, we were given one of the few tables for 2 outdoors. Then we waited for the waitstaff to come by and take our drink order. The menu is completely online which is the new post-pandemic norm, and it seems the dinner menu is updated daily. We ordered sparkling water which was really small cans of Pellegrino (be prepared to ask for more than 1 or 2). To share, we had the asazuke (nappa cabbage, cucumber, daikon radish, shio koji, yuzu described as "house made pickles" on the menu) to share, and I ordered the grilled mackerel and my friend had the tempura. We opted to split one bowl of rice instead one each. The theme here? We waited again for seemingly a really long time. This might be reassuring if you consider that each dish from the curated menu is prepared lovingly with market fresh ingredients and tradition instead of inefficiency and inexperience. Which is the case here? Hard to say.I found that my mackerel was crispy in the right places and savory where it counts. The seasoning was just right; however, maybe it didn't need to be drowned in all the miso sauce? The dish came with a small dab of "fried eggplant" according to the menu. It was soggy and otherwise characterless. My friend's tempura included kabocha (a type of squash), onion (rings), asparagus, and shrimp. She appreciated the quality of the tempura, but at the end of the meal summed up her experience as, "Good...but I've had better."To go the extra mile, I ordered the honey ice cream, honey crumb, milk shaving dessert. The presentation was beautiful, and this made the whole visit worthwhile. It had an understated flavor and satisfying creaminess without being too sweet. The crunchy bits of honey crumb were a pleasing touch.I had the sense that the restaurant means well, but I was underwhelmed. Please be advised that you will have to wait, wait, wait. I noticed some tables sat talking long after they had paid their bill, so this is a part of it.
