First visit to BiBi
First visit to this Indian restaurant. The food was excellent and authentic. Great service. We will be back. My favorite was the garlic naan and the chicken kabobs
Be the first to ReplyBibi Ji Santa Barbara – Michelin star?
Since we were at Santa Paula for the fun railbike experience with Sunburst, we decided to drive a bit further north to SB for dinner. It turns out that the famous Indian origin sommelier Rajat Parr is a co-owner of this restaurant. I was looking forward to tasting his “balanced” wines. Our first appetizer was the lamb barra kabab with turmeric, cumin and nutmeg, with a spicy mint-cilantro chutney. This was quite good – tender lamb chops with great seasoning and grilled to proper doneness. Our second appetizer was crispy cauliflower with chili, garlic, sesame seeds. This was OK – somewhat like gobhi manchurian, but nothing to write home about. Portion size was very large so we brought home the remainder – when I had it later I realized a lot of it was batter! For our mains we got 3 dishes – first up was kadhai paneer – caramelized onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, kadhai spices. It was good, but nothing outstanding. We also got their chili garlic chutney that was good – nice spice heat w/o being painful, good flavor from the Japanese chili, garlic and vinegar. The second dish was the Bibi-Ji butter chicken masala. Unfortunately the gravy was very similar in taste, and while it was good, perhaps our expectations were higher for a Michelin restaurant? We had two naans – garlic and plain, and a turmeric basmati rice to eat with these dishes. Also same micro-green decorations! They are phoning it in! Our third main was the local catch of the day – fish prepared in Kerala style moilee sauce, with beet poriyal. While the fish (haddock?) was good if a bit dry from overcooking, the sauce was again very similar. The beet poriyal was just pieces of beet scattered around! They had a very large wine list, but I asked what Rajat Parr wines they were serving. The sommelier came over and talked about Parr’s newer wine projects closer to LA county than SB wine district, and natural wines. I wanted a white to refresh on a hot day, and the others wanted red. So we decided to go with a bottle of red, and a white by the glass for me. The first “natural” white was from Parr’s collection was a bit lacking in acidity. I remember Parr making a big fuss about “balanced” wines, so this was disappointing. Then he poured a Chenin Blanc from Loire Valley, but not Parr’s own wine – so I chose that. The red was a strange mix of Grenache and Mission (I had not heard of this grape) from Cucamonga Valley – this is the east of LA area that Parr is promoting. The bottle had an undecipherable name on the front. Vivino could not figure out this rare vineyard and bottle. It looked very pale for a Grenache, because it was diluted 50% by the Mission grape. Just looked up Google – Mission grapes are also known as Los Angeles grapes, and basically is a much poorer cousin of proper wine making grapes. It tasted somewhat medicinal to me! Service was good, but overall this was a rather disappointing visit. Instead of desserts, we went next door to McConnell’s Ice cream and had ice creams. We had a superb meal at the Indian-Thai themed Camphor in LA. Now that is creativity worth a Michelin star (which they got this last round).

How can a restaurant go downhill so far so fast? Two awful experiences in the last year - sad because it was great a few years ago. Now, terrible service, an arrogant rude manager, intolerably loud disco music and food that is overpriced and mediocre at best,
Be the first to ReplyExtremely noisy
The menu is limited, but quality was good. The recorded music was deafening. We made 3 polite requests to have the volume lowered but they refused. Our party of 4 of locals will not return.
Be the first to ReplyGarlic Naan is a Must!
We went pretty early, so no wait and outdoor seating was available. Garlic Naan is fantastic! We also ordered the Coconut Curry, which was good but didn't have a ton of spice and didn't stand out from similar dishes we have had along the way. We heard the butter chicken was good so it might be a better option. We spent the weekend walking and trying new restaurants. This one was a solid stop! I do wish they offered more wines by the glass for people who are not there for a long dining experience though.

I was expecting a lot from this place after reading great reviews. Well, these must have been about a different place, or in different times... Some dishes were plain mediocre: the fried cauliflowers that some reviews craved about had been fired... way before being served, they were way overcooked and the sauce was just passable. The Baiganbartha was OK but nothing to write home about, and such was the murgh tikka. The flavours of these two dishes lacked spice complexity and richness. As many other tripadvisor reviews, I found the music to be too loud on the patio and our request to lower it was received politely but ignored. I was facing the place were they do the dishes and besides the loud music, was annoyed by the noise of dishes ans silverware banging against each other through the open door during my whole meal. No way the Michelin guide can even think of recommending that place any longer if it wants to be taken seriously... Will not return.
Be the first to ReplyPatio is Comfortable. The Food Was Fine But We Hoped for More.
We liked Bibi Ji well enough but our high expectations were not met. You hear a lot about this place. A possible Michelin star? We sat outside on the comfortable patio. The music was a bit much but whatever. The service was fine. No issues. It was really the food we did not love. The crispy cauliflower was just alright. As was the halibut. The butter chicken, naan and basmati rice were all good in my view. But no one else at my table enjoyed their meal. We will not return any time soon.

First, the food is above average but not spectacular. The menu the evening my wife and I were there was very limited and printed on a piece of colored paper that was barely legible. I would characterize the cuisine as "modern Indian" rather than traditional; the flavors were good, but not exciting. We ordered the on chat on the menu and it was okay but a bit of a mess on the plate. The two other dishes we order were okay but not memorable. The naan stuffed with peppers and onions was probably the best thing we ate.
Second, the setting on the rear patio was pleasant enough given the makeshift COVID reality. The biggest drawback, which is mentioned in other reviews, is that the music is WAY TOO LOUD. Our request to lower it were ignored, as has been mentioned in other reviews. I don't get this. If multiple guests request that the music be lowered, what does Bibi Ji gain by keeping it loud. Does anyone request that the music be made louder?
Third, the waiter serving us seemed clueless about the menu and Indian food in general. She could not tell us what wine by the glass they served but did bring out two samples (one white, one red). Both were terrible. This is a wine town and I would expect better. We decided to switch to beer and asked what kinds were available. She did not know but was sure that they had won awards. She brought out the cans and we order one of each and they were pretty good. I asked if one dish was similar to palak paneer and she did not know. I asked if the naan stuff with peppers and onion was similar to uttapam and she did not know.
Finally, we went here because we were craving Indian food since we left the Washington, DC area, which had many good restaurants -- the best of which was Rasika. We were hoping for something special at Bibi Ji after a local article mentioned that the Michelin Guide had mentioned it as a restaurant of interest. In the end, we were disappointed and do not plan to return.

Please do not go here! They have two kinds of bad wine by the glass; the food taste terrible and the music is so loud you cannot talk even as a couple. The server was trying and very good… but that’s it!!
Be the first to ReplySay “yes” to the Cauliflower and “no way” to the natural wine (you’ll thank us)
The Cauliflower appetizer was the absolute standout, the garlic Naan one of the best we have had, and the Butter Chicken, Chicken skewers and Curry veggie dishes were all solid. The service was very good as well. However, there is a caution that is vital. You probably have heard “Don’t drink the water” in Mexico, but at Bibi Ji, the best warning we can give you is “Don’t drink the natural wine.” And natural wine is the ONLY kind of wine they service. We were coaxed into a bottle and tried several others afterwards. Natural wine is NOT to be confused with organic wine, which this also qualifies to be, as this is something that you certainly will not forget when you taste. Only two in our party of 4 could drink more than a little, but they love stuff with “earthiness” like Kombucha. We all agreed that this wine has forward hits of organic matter (and let’s leave that to your imagination).

We received a bad bottle of wine and right away after one sip they wouldn’t take it back. Our waiter agreed it had a ‘petrol’ taste, and it had a strange carbonation. We spent a month in burgundy in 2019 and know what a white burgundy should taste like. This was a bad bottle. The food was average (lamb chops tough and dry etc.) and what you would expect in a resort area. Several local friends warned us not to go. The music was a positive though!
Be the first to ReplyGreat and creative Indian food in a not so great ambience
Five of us dined here recently and ordered numerous plates to share with all being delicious and savory as well as unique and not just your usual Indian food fare.
The dining area and a bar is all in one large room with a high ceiling. Unexpected and atypical Indian restaurant synthesized music blared so loud, we could not have table conversation. The music may have appeal to those in their 20s and those who work there, but the room was filled up with folks in their 50s and older. BTW, no-one sat at the bar the whole evening so the music was not about selling more alcohol beverages.
I shall return because the food is terrific and go with no more than 2-3 so we can at least converse.
The worst service ever!
We were here today we, we were a group of 8. The service and quantity of the food is third class. We ordered paneer thinking it would be a gravy dish and they served dried paneer with peppers. When asked the servers to bring onions, they came back saying the chef doesn’t allow that, really? Can you serve an Indian food without onions? We ordered garlic naans and there was no garlic in them. The servers were pathetic they had no idea about the dishes and didn’t bother about our table. Hopeless food and pathetic service! Never again!
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disappointment!
The person who seated us showed us to a table for 2 even though we made a reservation for 3. (Our friend came 5 minutes later). The music was too loud and it was difficult to have a conversation. The server had an attitude (not a good one). General Tso's cauliflower was a hit and so was my local fish but nothing else was memorable, including the raita. The restaurant was cold so we kept our jackets on the whole time. There are too many great restaurants in Santa Barbara and we will not be coming here again.
